TURLOCK — Outlasting their opponents in a long game, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team used a two-run rally in the 10th inning to beat No. 20 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-2, in game one of two on Saturday.
The Stanislaus win, which snapped a 17-game winning streak by the Toros, was the Warriors' first during California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Warriors (6-17, 1-7 CCAA) again played well in the nightcap but was blanked 2-0 for the twinbill split.
Cal State Dominguez Hills won three of four this weekend and improved to 18-3 overall and 11-1 in the CCAA. Before their streak, the previous time CSUDH lost was also against Cal State Stanislaus (Feb. 4).
In the thrilling game one, much of the action happened in the 10th inning with teams matched zeros after a 1-1 tie after the fourth.
CSUDH pushed ahead with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th on a bases loaded, one-out walk. Entered Warrior reliever
Kiley Mendez, who needed just five pitches to end the Toro rally. Mendez got Daisy Beltran to hit a liner back to the circle and Mendez doubled-up Christina Chavez at third to end the inning.
In the home-half of the 10th, Stanislaus responded so that it would not waste a great outing by starter
Brittani Weatherford. Weatherfor had tossed 9 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits to keep the Warriors within striking distance of picking up their first CCAA win.
After one out,
Sarah Locarnini started the rally with a single past the shortstop and went to third on a
Jordan Flora double.
Vanessa Del Toro then came up and laid down a safety squeeze to score Locarnini for the tying run. Flora then scored from third off the bat of Mendez on an infield grounder.
In game two, freshman starter
Natalie Rendon pitched herself into and out out many jams to keep the Toros off the scoreboard. She threw 6 2/3 innings without giving up a run on six hits despite walking four. CSUDH had runners on in every inning, including the bases loaded in the fifth, but did not score. In all, the Toros left 11 runners on base.
However, in the seventh inning, the Toros pushed across two runs on a two-run single by Melissa Pacheco off reliever Mendez.
Stanislaus wasn't able to respond this time off Stephanie Jimenez, who managed to win with a four-hit shutout.
Locarnini went 3-for-5 day in game one and Flora had three total hits in the doubleheader.
Head coach
Jan Schefkowitz is now another step closer to the milestone of 500 career victories at Cal State Stanislaus. She would reach that plateau with the next Cal State Stanislaus win, which could come Wednesday when the Warriors host Academy of Art at Noon.
