HILO, Hawaii — There weren't much offense for both teams in Thursday's softball doubleheader on the Big Island as host Hawaii Hilo beat Cal State Stanislaus twice in low scoring affairs.
The Vulcans won game one 2-1 with each team picking up three hits then both team collected five hits in the nightcap won by Hawaii Hilo 4-1.
Cal State Stanislaus, so far 1-3 on the trip, fell to 4-7 overall. The Warriors will look to even the six-game series on Friday when the teams meet again for their final doubleheader.
In game one, pitchers
Brittani Weatherford and Ashley Nelson were locked in a dual. Hilo got on the board first with a homer by Aisha Sueda to leadoff the second inning. The Warriors got even in the fourth when
Sarah Locarnini scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Vanessa Del Toro.
Hawaii Hilo scored the game-winner in the sixth with Sueda driving in Bryanna Hardy, who started the inning with a double.
Weatherford suffered her second loss of the year after allowing three hits in six innings. She struck out five and walked two. Nelson went the distance with six strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Vulcans (3-1) built a 4-0 lead with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, helped by two Stanislaus errors.
Jordan Flora hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning for the Warriors' only run. It as Flora's second homer of the season. She hit one in game one on Tuesday off the same pitcher, Amber Waracka.
Lauren Liming and Del Toro both doubled in the game.
Natalie Rendon was tagged with the loss in the circle in game two before handing off to
Kiley Mendez, who again threw well in relief. Mendez pitched three hitless innings and gave up one unearned run.
