HAYWARD — Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State East Bay played two more one-run baseball games on Saturday as the teams split the conference doubleheader at Pioneer Field.
The Warriors held off another East Bay ninth inning rally to win today's opener, 5-4, but dropped the nightcap, 3-2 in seven innings.
Cal State Stanislaus is now 8-9 overall and 5-6 in the CCAA heading into Sunday's finale as the series shifts back to Turlock. Cal State East Bay is now 9-12, 3-8 during conference play.
Warrior starter
Rafael Vasquez turned in a quality start in game one on Saturday, going six strong and allowed just one run on two hits. He struck out seven and walked one to earn the win.
Chris Short threw all three innings in relief but gave up three runs before shutting it down.
Stanislaus used a four-run seventh to jump ahead. Turning the tide on their opponents, the Warriors capitalized on two CSUEB errors to get four unearned runs to take a 5-1 lead.
Colton Beatty and
Jordan Long had RBI singles in the inning.
CSUEB get a run back in the seventh with a solo home run by Charlie Sharrer, his second in as many games, to make it 5-2. Like Friday's opener, East Bay rallied again in the ninth. A leadoff single and an one-out walk gave the Pioneers some life. With two outs, Tanner Laran drove in two runs with a single to make it an one-run game.
Short walked the next batter before getting David Castillo to fly out to center to end the game.
Justin Manci, Beatty and Long each had two of the team's eight hits off three CSUEB pitchers.
In the nightcap, Stanislaus again had the lead, up 2-0 in the middle of the second inning. The Warriors picked up two more unearned runs in the frame by forcing the issue with squeeze bunts.
However, Cal State East Bay scored runs in the second and third innings off starter
Shay Maltese to lead 3-2 after three. Maltese allowed three runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out three in the loss.
In the sixth, the Warriors had runners at the corners (
Michael Turay doubled and when to third on a CSUEB error) with one out. However, Long popped-up to first for a double-play to end the inning. Stanislaus had a runner at second with one out in the seventh, but two infield pop-ups ended the game.
Eli Davis was 3-for-3 in the nightcap while Manci and Turay both doubled to account for all five CSUS hits.
The two one-run games is the third in this series. The Warriors won Friday's opener in Turlock, 6-5, by holding off a CSUEB ninth inning rally.
