TURLOCK — In a well played collegiate baseball game by both sides, Cal State Stanislaus won the game on a bases loaded walk as the Warriors took game one of the series against Cal State San Bernardino, 2-1, on Friday.
Jordan Long drew a bases load walk in the bottom of the eighth inning for the go-ahead, and eventual winning, score as Cal State Stanislaus improved to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The win backed up great pitching performances by Warrior starter
Byron Lemon and
Anthony Gotelli in a closely contested game. Lemon threw 7 1/3 strong innings and allowed just one run on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Gotelli picked up the win in relief to improve to 2-1. He tossed 1 2/3 hitless innings, walked one and struck out two.
Lemon made his fourth start of the year his best thus far. After allowing a run in the second on a RBI single by Mike Newell, Lemon got out of some jams and cruised. In the third, he allowed an one-out double, but left that runner standing at third. With two runners on and one out in the fifth, he again stranded runners at the corners with two fly out. Lemon retired eight straight in the middle innings before handing the ball over to Gotelli in the eighth.
CSUSB (6-8, 3-6 CCAA) left seven runners on base, including a Coyote at third four times in the game.
The eighth inning Stanislaus rally was started by a
Ross Gonsalves leadoff walk. CSUSB reliever Kerry Kelley threw a
Eli Davis bunt away trying to get the lead runner at second to allow both runners to advance. CSUSB elected to walk
Justin Manci intentionally to load the bags.
Kelley got
Andy Yingling to strikeout to set-up Long's at bat. After falling behind 1-2, Long patiently took three staight balls with the final pitch low below his knees for the walk, scoring Gonsalves.
Michael Turay went 2-for-4 and
DJ Arellano also had two hits as part of the seven-hit production. Arellano doubled in the Warrior third and scored on a RBI single by Turay to tie the game at 1-1.
The four-game series between these two teams continue on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
