CSUS upsets #3 Chico State, coach gets win No. 500

CHICO — Brittani Weatherford and the Warriors made sure head coach Jan Schefkowitz didn't have to wait any longer for that career milestone. The Warriors upset No. 3 Chico State, 2-0, in game one on Friday as Schefkowitz picked up career victory No. 500.

In the series opener Weatherford out-dueled Sam Baker, one of two highly regarded pitchers on the Chico State team, to help Cal State Stanislaus beat NFCA's No. 3  ranked team in the country. Chico State won the nightcap, 9-2, for the twinbill split.

Cal State Stanislaus is now 7-18 overall and 2-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association heading into Saturday's doubleheader. The Warrior win snapped an eight-game losing streak against Chico State. It was also their second win against a ranked team in three games.

Weatherford allowed just four hits in the shutout victory. She had nine strikeouts and walked just one. Chico State (13-4, 7-3 CCAA) only got past second base once, in the fifth inning, but was the runner was stranded there after Weatherford struck out Jackie Munoz to end the Wildcat rally.

The Warriors manufactured both runs in the game and needed just four total hits for the win. Jordan Flora went 2-for-3 with Vanessa Del Toro and Rachel Borges picking up the other hits.

Sarah Locarnini walked, stole second and scored on a Del Toro single to left for a run in the first inning. In the third, Weatherford drew an one-out walk, stole second and third and with two outs, Flora singled up the middle to plate Weatherford.

Chico State tried to comeback in the seventh with a leadoff single by Sam Quade, but Weatherford got Hailey Stockman to strike out looking, Diana Payan to fly out to right and Rachel Failla to strike out looking to end the game.

In the nightcap, Chico State scattered 10 hits and used three Stanislaus errors for its runs. The Wildcats were up 3-0 after the first inning and scored in the fourth and fifth innings with key two-run doubles by Munoz and Emily McEnaney.

The Warriors got two runs in the fifth on an error, three walks and a Del Toro RBI double. Del Toro went 3-for-4 in the nightcap to account for three of the team's four hits off two different Wildcat pitcher Jessica McDermott.
