TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus
Warriors came out swinging on Friday in the opening game against Cal State Monterey Bay as they defeated the Otters, 8-4.
The Warriors go above .500 for the first time during this CCAA season as they improved to 12-11 overall and 9-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Monterey Bay is now 15-12 overall and 8-9 in the CCAA.
The Warriors are now 21-1 against Cal State Monterey Bay since the Otters joined the CCAA.
Early hits by Colton Beatty and Justin Manci set up a RBI single by Jordan Long in the first inning. DJ Arellano followed Long with a line drive single to left to put the Warriors up early 2-0 after 14 pitches.
The bats went quiet for both sides till the fifth inning when Long came up with another key double to right field off of CSU Monterey's second pitcher of the day Jake Paolinetti.
The seventh inning begin with a bang when Beatty took the first pitch off Steven Farnworth over the wooden manual scoreboard in right field. Three batters later, with a runner on, Yingling followed with a home run to cap a three-run inning.
The Otters responded with a four-run rally in the eighth.
After two quick outs, a single and an error by the Warriors put two runners on with two outs. A short single to the shortstop loaded the bases that chases Warriors starter Byron Lemon. Jeff Phillips took Phil Quade to right field with a three-run double to make it 8-4.
Lemon got the win after a solid outing. He went 7 2/3 innings and allowed just one earned run on eight hits. Quade pitched the final four outs and gave up the one double.
Long ended the game 4 for 5 with a double and three runs batted in and Manci went 3-for-5. Chris Blanton went 4-for-4 to lead Cal State Monterey Bay.
Dodging weekend rain, game two of the series has been moved up to 10 a.m. on Saturday in Turlock with the final two games tentatively schedule in Seaside on Sunday.
