SEASIDE — The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team extends its win-streak on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep over Cal State Monterey Bay, completing the four-game series sweep over the Otters.
The Warriors, winners of four straight and 10 of the last 13 games, improved to 15-11 overall and 12-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The streak has helped the Warriors moved up to a tie for third place in the conference standings with UC San Diego — Stanislaus' next opponent.
Cal State Monterey Bay falls to 15-15 and 8-12 in the CCAA. Cal State Stanislaus improved its all-time series record over CSUMB to 27-2. The Warriors have won 18 of the last 19 games against the Otters.
Eli Davis again was the offensive star, going 2-for-3 in game one and 3-for-3 in game two on Sunday. In the last three games against the Otters, Davis went 9-for-11 with 10 RBIs. He was 10-for-16 for the series.
In game one, Davis' two-run double in the seventh and
Michael Turay's run-scoring double gave the Warriors a 4-2 lead.
Garrett Wright, who went 3-for-3 in the game, started the rally with a leadoff single. Davis had also drove in a run in the fifth to put the Warriors on the board.
Stanislaus would add an insurance run in the eight when
DJ Arellano scored on a Wright single up the middle.
Head coach
Kenny Leonesio got another solid start from the Warrior staff as
Phil Quade went 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits.
Chris Short entered the game in the sixth with another strong effort to pick up the win. The lefty gave up just one run on five hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.
In the nightcap, the top of the Stanislaus batting order collectively went 8-for-14 with four RBIs to lead the way.
The Warriors scored twice in the first inning after Davis and Turay singled to start the game. With one out,
Justin Manci drove in both runs with a single to center.
Wright triped with one out in the second inning and was part of the two-run inning to give CSUS a 4-0 lead. Davis and
Colton Beatty both drove in runs.
Dustin Baisdon made his first start of his collegiate career on the mound and went four innings in the shortened seven-inning game.
Shay Maltese pitched the final three innings with just one run allowed on two hits.
The Warriors look to continue the winning streak next weekend with UC San Diego comes to town. Cal State Stanislaus opens the four-game set against the Tritons on Friday starting at 3 p.m. at Warrior Baseball Field, where the Warriors are 9-4 this season.
