TURLOCK — The UC San Diego Tritons outscored the Warriors in a pitching duel as they took the first game of the four-game conference series, 3-2, on Friday.
In a battle of third place teams, UC San Diego improved to 15-14, 13-8 CCAA while the Warriors dropped to 15-12, 12-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association before Saturday's doubleheader, with a new start time of 10 a.m.
UC San Diego's Ryan Goodbrand out-dueled Bryron Lemon for the victory going 7 1/3 innings with seven strike outs. He gave up two runs on five hits. Lemon went eight innings and gave up two unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
A good dosage of small ball came to be the difference in the game. UCSD used hit by pitches, sacrifice bunting and timely hitting to provide runs for their staff. The Warriors ran in to a bit of misfortune by stranding runners at third base three times with less then two outs.
The Tritons begin the second inning with a single by Nick La Face. A hits bats men, a sacrifice bunt and a grounder give UCSD its first run.
In the sixth, a defensive substitution proved to be a timely call for UCSD who moved Gregg Ringold to left field and Scott Liske to right field.
Justin Manci, provided what seemed to be a two-run homer to left field, when Ringold scaled the fence and brought that ball back for an out. Then, doubled off
Colton Beatty, who failed to touch second on the way back to first base.
The Tritons answered by scoring a run in both the seventh and eighth innings.
The Warriors finally chased Goodbrand in the eighth, when
Eli Davis lined a home run over the left field fence, which landed in the bullpen that cut the lead to one. Closer Tony York came in relief to close out the inning.
The Warriors saw some success off the UCSD pitcher in the ninth when
DJ Arellano doubled to left center and
Andy Yingling singled to short left field with just one out. York was able to wave the next Warrior batter on a full count fastball and a diving play by the third baseman closed out the game.
