TURLOCK —
Natalie Rendon threw the best game of her career as the Warriors went 1-2 on the first day of the
Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno at Pedretti Sports Complex.
The Warriors lost a heartbreaker, 7-6, in eight innings to Cal Baptist after a four-run rally in the seventh before beating Western Oregon with a 2-0 victory behind Rendon's gem. Stanislaus dropped the nightcap 5-1 to Dixie State.
Kristan Burns went 6-for-9 with two RBIs on the day and
Rachel Borges had four hits, including a double and a triple, to lead the Warriors offensively.
Rendon threw a two-hit shutout against Western Oregon and struck out nine. WOU loaded the bases in the second inning with one out, but Rendon got a strikeout and a fouled out to end the inning. Rendon then retired the next 10 batters before allowing a single in the sixth. She then ended the game with three strikeouts out of the final five batters.
Stanislaus got on the board in the first inning scoring runs on two grounders.
Sarah Locarnini led off by being hit by a pitch. A WOU error and stolen base later,
Jordan Flora's grounder scored Locarnini then a
Vanessa Del Toro grounder scored
Brittani Weatherford.
Burns and
Brittney Rickles each went 2-for-3 in the game.
Against Cal Baptist, the Warriors rallied for four runs to force extra innings. Burns drove in two runs to key the rally before ending up 2-for-3 in that game. Borges went 4-for-4 with a double and a triple.
Cal Baptist scored five runs in the fifth off Weatherford to erase a 2-0 CSUS lead. Marshean August drove in two runs with a single and Mara Rodriguez blasted a three-run home run for the Lancers. The Lancers finished day one ended up 3-0 on Friday.
In the late game, it was another five-run innings -- this time the third -- by Dixie State that did the Warriors in. Dixie used a walk and four straight hits to put up the big number.
The Warriors will play Saint Martin's (3-0 on day one) and Montana State Billings on Saturday as the tournament continues at both Pedretti and Turlock Regional Sports Complex fields.
