Box Score POMONA — Cal Poly Pomona's Kevin Bosson allowed just four Stanislaus singles as the Broncos ace held down the Warriors' offense in a 4-2 game on Saturday.
Bosson took a two-hit shutout into the ninth inning as Cal Poly Pomona took game one of the four-game series to improve to 24-13 overall and 16-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Warriors fell to 20-15 overall and 13-12 in the CCAA, and for the time being switched places with Pomona in the CCAA standings. Cal State Stanislaus is now in sixth place.
Colton Beatty had two of the Warriors' four hits and helped Stanislaus rally in its final at-bats to avoid the shutout. Cal State Stanislaus scored two unearned runs in the final inning with the RBI single by Beatty, which plated
Eli Davis, and a grounder by
Justin Manci that scored
Michael Turay.
However, Bosson was the show in front of his home crowd. He went the distance and struck out seven without a walk for the win. At one stretch in the game, he retired 13 consecutive batters and allowed just one runner in scoring position through six innings.
Cal State Stanislaus had an opportunity in the seventh with runners at the corners with two outs, but Bosson got a fly out to end the rally.
Pomona got on the board in the second with three straight hits to start the frame. CSUS starter
Byron Lemon escaped further trouble with a groundout doubleplay, but two Broncos scored in the inning.
Lemon went 6 2/3 innings and scattered 11 hits, gave up four runs. He struck out one and walked one.
Andrew Graham pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
Donald Walter went 4-for-4 with a triple and a RBI while Jordan Whitman was 3-for-4 to lead Cal Poly Pomona.
The series continues with a doubleheader on Sunday with the first pitch at 11 a.m.
