Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO — Two great outings by starting pitchers and a lot of offense were on display by the Warriors as they blasted San Francisco State, 14-1 and 11-0, at Maloney Field on Saturday.
On the mound
Rafael Vasquez and
Chris Short both tossed complete games and offensively Cal State Stanislaus scored 25 runs on 29 hits to take the series three games to none.
The Warriors improved to 24-17 overall and 17-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. They will be going for the rare series sweep on Sunday when the teams hook-up for the finale at Warrior Baseball Field at 11 a.m.
Eli Davis went 3-for-5 with a two-run double and drove in two in game one, then was 4-for-5 with a triple and drove in three for a monsterous offensive day.
And he obviously wasn't the only one with the hot bats.
Joe Medeiros went 5-for-7 with two doubles and three RBIs in the doubleheader.
Michael Turay and
Craig Beevers each had four hits and drove in three runs.
DJ Arellano and
Colton Beatty both had three hits with Beatty driving in four runs.
As a team, the Warriors went 20-for-69 (.420 average) in the doubleheader with eight extra-base hits, walked 12 times and stole five bases.
In game one, the Warriors scored at least a run in every inning except for the first and third. Medeiros doubled twice in the game, Beevers singled in two runs in the fifth and Davis belted a two-run homer in the ninth to highlight the offensive out-burst.
On the mound, Vasquez tosses yet another gem, this time a three-hitter. He gave up the one run in the first after a leadoff walk, a wild pitch and a bunt single. The runner scored on a double play grounder. The Gators reached third just one time -- in the second -- after that point. In fact no Gator runner touched second base after the second inning.
In the nightcap, a six-run second inning gave the Warriors a big cushion en route to the blow-out win. Five singles, a walk, a hit batsman and a sac fly resulted in the scoring, capped by a two-run single by Beatty.
The Warriors tagged on runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away. Turay tripled in two runs in the fifth inning rally.
Short was also impressive in his outing. He gave up six hits, struck out six and walked three in the shutout. SF State had the bases loaded in the sixth after a couple of singles and a fielding error, but Short got Pianto to strike-out looking to end the inning.
Defensively, the Stanislaus defense turned four double plays in the twinbill.
