Box Score 2 TURLOCK — The Warriors scored four times during a resilient two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh before coming up just short as Humboldt State spoiled senior and family day at Warrior Softball Field.
Humboldt State swept the doubleheader from Cal State Stanislaus, 10-1 in seven innings and 13-12 in the nightcap.
Playing in her final game, senior
Brittany Balanesi had three hits including a double in game one and two hits in the nightcap to close out her career.
Cal State Stanislaus didn't go down quietly in the season finale and had everyone in the facility on the edge of their seats until the last pitch. Humboldt State had scored twice in the seventh to take a 13-8 lead going into the last half-inning. After two quick flyouts, the Warriors started the thrilling rally.
As if no one wanted to make the final out of the season,
Vanessa Del Toro drew a walk just ahead of a
Lauren Liming home run to left to make it 13-10. Balanesi singled to left to start another rally.
Brittney Rickles followed it with a walk ahead of a RBI single to left by
Rachel Borges to make it 13-11.
Two wild-pitches by Alyssa Castillo later, the Warriors cut the deficit to 13-12 when Rickles raced home under the tag on the second bouncer.
Castillo, who ended up with 232 official pitches on the day, walked the next two Warriors
Sarah Locarnini and
Brittani Weatherford to load the bases for slugger
Jordan Flora.
After a long battle at the plate, Flora hit a 3-2 pitch up the middle at Castillo who hugged the ball on her stomach and threw out the runner to end the game.
All of that final-inning drama capped off another day filled of offense, especially in game two. The home-run derby started in the first inning with a two-run shot by HSU's Chrissy Stalf to cap-off a three-run first for the Lumberjacks.
The Warriors reponded with two bombs of their own. Locarnini led off the inning with a solo shot to center and a walk later, Flora belted a two-run homer also to center to tie the game.
Humboldt State got a solo shot in the third by Dani Randall and a two-run homer by Alicia Reid in the fourth (her 14th of the season). With four home runs on the day, HSU tied the CCAA record for home runs in a season with 64.
Del Toro and Liming ended up 3-for-4 in game two. Liming drove in three runs. Locarnini, Flora, Burns and Balanesi each had two hits.
HSU scored 10 runs on 11 hits with four doubles in the first game. Kirsten Nouzovsky doubled and homered an drove in three runs to lead the Jacks.
