Box Score 2 TURLOCK -- The steady stream of stellar starting pitching performances continued Saturday for the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team, but the bats went cold and the defensive miscues resurfaced as the Warriors dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Fresno Pacific, 3-1 and 3-0, at Warrior Field.
The Warriors (3-4) took a one-run lead into the ninth inning of game one, only to see it disappear with a three-run rally by Fresno Pacific (5-2). They were only able to collect one base hit in game two, as the Sunbirds' Wilson Alford (1-0) flashed a bit of starting pitching brilliance of his own, going the distance for the complete game shutout.
The Warriors' starters have posted five quality starts (at least 6 innings pitched, 3 runs or less allowed) in the team's first seven games this season, but the defense has already committed 14 errors, 13 of which have come in their five home games to date. The Warriors had three more on Saturday that led to three unearned runs.
GAME ONE
Cal State Stanislaus starter
Rafael Vasquez nearly secured his first win of the season on his own, carrying a two-hit shutout into the ninth inning before having to settle for a no-decision for the second time in as many starts. Vasquez gave up a leadoff single right back up the middle on the first pitch he threw in the ninth and his day was done.
With Vasquez finally out of the game, the Sunbirds went to work. Brett Bishop reached on a one-out fielding error by third baseman
Tynan Pedretti, who had just entered the game as a defensive replacement. Pedretti was trying to check the runner at second back to the bag and had the ball slip out of his throwing hand before he could make a play, allowing Bishop to reach safely.
A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, and that's when Kevin Coppom drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-run double to left field. Warriors relievers would walk three more batters to bring in an insurance run before finally getting the final out.
Coppom finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Chris De La Torre (2-0) got the win in relief for the Sunbirds with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out three.
Danny Molieri (0-1), who saved both games in the Warriors' doubleheaders sweep Friday at Fresno Pacific, took the loss after surrendering Coppom's double in the ninth.
Five different Warriors had base hits in game one.
Matt Chaidez put the Warriors ahead 1-0 in the seventh with an RBI single. They got three consecutive two-out base hits from
Andrew Graves,
James Heller and then Chaidez to break the scoreless tie.
Game one moved very quickly, ending in 2 hours, 24 minutes. Vasquez began the ninth inning before the two-hour mark. Both Vasquez and Fresno Pacific starter Ryan Castadio were extremely efficient throughout the game, getting numerous one-pitch outs.
GAME TWO
Ashford continued the efficiency of Castadio in game two, allowing just one hit and two total base runners en route to a seven-inning complete game shutout. Five different Sunbirds collected base hits, led by Devin Lee who went 2 for 4 with a double.
Fresno Pacific got its first run of the game in the third inning after leadoff hitter Joseph Garabedian reached safely on an error. An unsuccessful sacrifice put out Garabedian at second, but two base hits later, Bobby Mendoza was driving in Steven Lozier for a 1-0 lead.
Two leadoff walks in the fourth inning from Warriors starter
Michael York (0-1) set the table for Keny Overly, who tripled to deep right-center field to bring home two and make it 3-0.
Pedretti managed the Warriors' lone hit, a two-out single in the third inning. The Warriors went 3-up, 3-down in each of the last four innings, and Pedretti's base hit was the only hiccup in Ashford retiring 20 of the final 21 batters he faced.
Cal State Stanislaus opens California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a four-game series at UC San Diego beginning Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
