Box Score TURLOCK --
Craig Beevers pushed his hitting streak to nine games with two more hits Sunday, but the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team fell for the ninth time in a row, losing 8-1 to Cal State L.A. in the series finale.
The first-place Golden Eagles (15-8, 13-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association) did most of its damage with one big inning for the fourth game in a row, this time breaking a 1-1 tie with a four-run sixth inning. Cal State L.A. completed the four-game sweep in a series where they totalled 48 hits and 28 runs across the four games.
Beevers' hitting streak is the longest for any Warrior this season. Sunday was also his team-leading eighth multi-hit game of the year. The senior outfielder has also reached base safely in 11 straight games.
Dustin Baisdon (1-3) looked strong for the Warriors (5-18, 2-14 CCAA) through the first five innings of the game, only allowing a two-out RBI single in the second inning. Baisdon retired 10 in a row from the third to the sixth, but ran into trouble with one out in that sixth inning.
Following a leadoff groundout, Cal State L.A. got a walk, double, intentional walk, a two-RBI double and an RBI single all in succession. Baisdon struck out Manny Acosta for the second out, but designated hitter David Trejo tacked on another run with a two-out RBI single, and the Golden Eagles led 5-1.
The Warriors had numerous chances to score before finally tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
Joey Machado led off the inning with a single and would later score on a bases loaded walk to
Pete Pendley. They would leave the bases loaded, however, when
Klayton Miller struck out looking to end the inning.
Cal State Stanislaus also had a runner in scoring position with two outs in the third and had two runners in scoring position in the fourth, but couldn't get that key two-out RBI hit to take control.
Conversely, the Golden Eagles thrived with two outs all series. Including the two two-out RBIs they got Sunday, the Golden Eagles scored 13 runs during the four-game series with two outs on the board.
James Wharton led the Eagles offensively, going 3 for 4 with a double, homerun, two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Warriors continue CCAA play with a four-game home series against Cal State Dominguez Hills next weekend. The series begins with a single game Friday beginning at 3 p.m.
