Box Score TURLOCK -- The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team may have dropped its last 10 games in a row, but don't tell
Craig Beevers that.
The senior outfielder continued his stretch of success Friday by pushing his hitting streak to 10 games and driving in three runs, as the Warriors lost 7-3 to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.
Beevers brought in his first run of the day with an RBI groundout in the first inning that cut the Toros' (12-10, 9-8 CCAA) early 2-0 lead in half. He would close the gap to one run again in the third inning with a two-out RBI single, making it 4-3. Beevers now has a hit in every game dating to Feb. 24.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Warriors' (5-19, 2-15 CCAA) offense has struggled. The team has failed to score more than four runs during its current 10-game losing streak, and on six ocassions has only scored two runs or less.
Cal State Dominguez Hills brought its bats to Friday's game, pounding out 16 hits for seven runs. Five different players had at least two hits, with Kevin Logan, Brady Conlan and Carlos Avila getting three each. The No. 1-3 hitters in the Toros' lineup went a combined 7 for 12 with a double, five runs scored and an RBI.
The teams traded unearned runs in the first inning with each squad throwing away balls at first base, allowing runners to get to third. The Toros added single runs in the second and third innings, but Beevers' RBI single kept things close.
Cal State Dominguez Hills took control of the game with a three-run fifth. The Toros got six consecutive base hits to start the inning, with Thomas, Charles Rossman and Avila driving in runs with RBI singles.
Cal State Stanislaus had its chances to score, but left runners in scoring position on numerous ocassions. They left runners on second and third with two outs in the third, still only trailing by one run, and left runners on second and first base in sixth trailing by four. In the seventh, the Warriors had runners at second and third with one out and the bases loaded with two outs, but failed to score any runs.
Warriors starter
Byron Lemon (1-5) was tagged with all seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits and two walks.
Joe Whitehead and
Pete Pendley gave the Warriors 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Pendley struk out three and allowed only one hit in his two innings of work.
The Toros' bullpen was strong, too, posting 6 2/3 scoreless innings between three pitchers, allowing just one hit, after starter Sean Wardour left in the third inning. The win went to Tyler Mark (2-0), who threw 3 2/3 innings.
The series continues Saturday at Warrior Baseball Field with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
