Box Score 2 TURLOCK -- Cal State Stanislaus pounded out six extra-base hits Saturday, but too many free passes to the Gators came back to haunt them, as San Francisco State swept the Warriors in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader, 9-4 and 10-4.
The Warriors (5-13, 2-9 CCAA) had five extra-base hits in game one, including a double and triple from
Craig Beevers, who would finish the day 3 for 7 with two runs scored.
Clint Brill hit his second double of the day in game two, but the Warriors only managed four runs in each of the games.
Meanwhile, San Francisco State (7-12, 4-7 CCAA) capitalized on 22 free passes (17 walks, five hit-by-pitches) to the tune of 19 total runs in the two games. The Gators' lone extra-base hit came in the final inning of the day, a solo homerun by Miguel Flores in the top of the seventh inning in game two.
GAME ONE
The Gators led 8-0 through 6 1/2 innings after a five-run fourth, an insurance run in the sixth and two more runs in the top of the seventh. That's when the Warriors' bats went to work with back-to-back doubles by
Skippy Ferreria and
Pete Pendley to start the bottom of the seventh and put the Warriors on the board. Pendley would later score on a sacrifice fly from
Colt McLaughlin to make it 8-2.
Cal State Stanislaus would get single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to keep the Gators honest. Brill came in on a two-out fielding error by Gators shortstop Flores in the eighth, and Beevers scored on a Brill sacrifice fly in the ninth.
San Francisco State starter Zack Malik (2-2) threw a complete game for the win, scattering six hits over nine innings and striking out five.
Rafael Vasquez (0-3) surrendered five runs on seven hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings for the Warriors in the loss.
GAME TWO
San Francisco State bookended game two with big innings in the first and seventh inning to come away with the doubleheader sweep.
The Gators tallied six runs in the first inning thanks to a one-out walk followed by three straight singles through the left side of the infield, with the shortstop playing farther up the middle at double play depth. Those base hits were followed by two more walks and a hit by pitch, ending
Jeremy McDonald's (0-2) day before he recorded the second out of the inning.
San Francisco State would get a sacrifice fly and a fourth single through the left side of the infield to make it 6-0 after a half inning.
Andrew Graham provided 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Warriors out of the bullpen before running into trouble in the top of the seventh with the Flores homerun and two straight singles. It was Graham's longest outing of the year. He entered the game having thrown 4 1/3 innings all season long.
Cal State Stanislaus made a push to come back in game two behind Graham with two runs in the second and single scores in the third and fourth innings to make it 6-4. But the rally went cold in the final three innings, as the Gators retired 10 of the last 11 Warriors to come to the plate.
Cal State Stanislaus stranded 10 runners in game two. The Warriors loaded the bases in both the first and second innings and only managed the two second inning runs.
Jack Veronin (1-2) earned the win for the Gators in relief of starter Ryan De Jesus, who got in trouble after allowing three runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Cal State Stanislaus next hosts Cal State L.A. in a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series beginning with a single game Friday at 2 p.m.
