Box Score 2 TURLOCK -- Senior second baseman
Justin Charles went a perfect 4 for 4 in game two of Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader, but the Warriors would drop both ends to second place Cal State L.A., losing 6-2 and 7-4.
Charles had four singles in game two and was part of a three-run rally in the sixth that cut the Warriors' (5-17, 2-13 CCAA) deficit in half at 7-4.
Ross Gonsalves and
Tynan Pedretti had two hits each in game two as the Warriors struck for 11 hits in all. The Golden Eagles (14-8, 12-3 CCAA) had 17 hits though, and managed to score five times in the fourth inning to secure the doubleheader sweep.
GAME ONE
Saturday's opener was a close, back-and-forth affair through seven innings. Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Warriors answered back to tie it an inning later with an RBI groundout from
Craig Beevers.
Cal State Stanislaus took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning of game one on an RBI single from
Klayton Miller. The Warriors had two runners in scoring position with one out after back-to-back base hits from Beevers and
Pete Pendley, but only managed the one go-ahead run after a failed safety squeeze and a fly out to end the inning.
Cal State L.A. answered right back in the top of the seventh with a game-tying sacrifice fly. Warriors starter
Rafael Vasquez held the Golden Eagles in check by scattering seven hits over seven innings of work, allowing two runs and striking out three.
But the Golden Eagles would once again capitalize on an error with multiple two-out RBI hits, as they did in a six-run inning on Friday. After a one-out error in the top of the eighth loaded the bases for Cal State L.A., their third sacrifice fly of the game would bring in the go-ahead run to make it 3-2. Then a two-RBI single by Casey Ryan and an RBI double from Scott Masik made it 6-2.
All four runs in the inning were unearned, giving the Golden Eagles 10 unearned runs scored in two innings played on Friday and Saturday.
Ross Gonsalves led the Warriors with a 2-4 performance. Ryan led the Golden Eagles offensively with three hits and two RBIs.
GAME TWO
The nightcap looked to be another close one, as Cal State L.A. grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning but couldn't tack anymore on through the third inning.
The Golden Eagles struck for their third big inning in as many games in the fourth, scoring five runs with three consecutive RBI base hits from their 2-3-4 hitters in the lineup, making it 6-0.
Cal State Stanislaus slowly began to chip away with a single run in the bottom of the fourth. Cal State L.A. got that run back in the top of the fifth making it 7-1, but the Warriors weren't done.
The Warriors got leadoff singles from Charles and Pendley, then loaded the bases with a one-out walk to
Trent Frisbie. That's when the merry-go-round began, as
Anthony Nicolosi was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, Beevers found a hole with an RBI single and Gonsalves drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, making it 7-4.
The rally ended there, though, with a flyout to left field. The Warriors would go down in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
Golden Eagles reliever Cedar Morgan earned the five-out save after entering in the sixth.
Joe Whitehead provided 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout for the Warriors.
The series concludes Sunday with a single game beginning at 11 a.m.
