Lemon tosses complete-game shutout in twinbill split

4/13/2013 5:29:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK -- Pitching was the name of the game Saturday, and Cal State Stanislaus starter Byron Lemon played that game best of all.

Lemon blanked visiting Sonoma State in a complete-game shutout, striking out a career-high 10 and walking just one in a 4-0 doubleheader opener victory. The Seawolves would return the favor in the nightcap, shutting out the Warriors by the same score, 4-0, to earn a split.

GAME ONE

Lemon (2-7) rung up nine of his 10 strikeouts without a swing, freezing batters all game long with a mixture of fastballs and breaking balls, painting corners on either side of the plate. He retired 10 of 11 batters from the third to sixth innings.

The game was tied 0-0 through 4 1/2 innings, as Sonoma State (22-14, 14-12 California Collegiate Athletic Association) starter George Asmus (5-2) matched Lemon frame for frame. Asmus would go seven innings and allow one run on eight hits, striking out four.

Cal State Stanislaus (8-29, 5-25 CCAA) broke through with a single run in the fifth inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a suicide squeeze bunt from Craig Beevers.

The ball never left the infield during the Warriors' fifth-inning rally. It began with Matt Chaidez leading off the inning with a hit by pitch. He moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on an infield single by Skippy Ferreria. That's when Beevers pushed a bunt deep in the hole between the pitcher's mound and first base, allowing Chaidez to score.

The Warriors clung to that one-run lead, riding the arm of Lemon along the way, until a three-run burst in the eighth inning. Another leadoff hit by pitch, this time to Beevers, gave the Warriors their fourth leadoff runner on base in the game. Two quick outs made it look as though the inning would be over quickly, but the Warriors came through with four consecutive two-out base hits, including RBI singles from Tynan Pedretti, James Heller and Chaidez to make it 4-0.

Pedretti would lead all players with a 3 for 4 performance in game one, including a double, RBI and run scored. He finished 4 for 8 with two doubles on the day. Andrew Graves also had multiple hits in game one, going 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Every single Warriors starter had at least one base hit in game one, with the bottom of the order doing most of the damage. Cal State Stanislaus' 7-8-9 hitters went a combined 5 for 10 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the opener.

GAME TWO

The Warriors faced a similar pitching performance from Sonoma State in game two. Seawolves starter Glenn Wallace (5-1) held the Warriors scoreless through eight innings, scattering seven hits and striking out five. Scott Harkin came in to pitch a perfect ninth to preserve the 4-0 shutout and the doubleheader split for the Seawolves.

Warriors starter Michael York (0-3) limited Sonoma State to just one hit in five shutout frames before running into trouble in the sixth. York still posted his third consecutive quality start Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.

Cal State Stanislaus had its biggest opportunity to get on the board in game two during the fourth inning after loading the bases with one out and bringing its hottest hitter of the day to the plate in Pedretti.

But Pedretti would ground into a 6-4-3 double play, ending the threat and shifting momentum to the Seawolves. Sonoma State picked up two runs on back-to-back sacrifice flies in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead and tacked on single insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the 4-0 win.

Seven different Warriors got a base hit in game two, giving the team 19 hits on the day -- its most in a doubleheader this season. Leadoff batter Justin Charles was on base twice with a single and a walk.

The series shifts to Rohnert Park Sunday for another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
