Box Score 2 TURLOCK -- Cal State Stanislaus rapped 16 base hits over two games Saturday, coming within one of their season-best output for a doubleheader, but spent the day searching for that elusive two-out RBI hit.
As a result, the Warriors stranded 16 total runners in the two games and lost both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader to Cal Poly Pomona, 7-3 in the opener and 4-0 in the night cap.
GAME ONE
Cal State Stanislaus (7-27, 4-22 CCAA) stayed right in the game during the opener after the Broncos (21-15, 14-13 CCAA) struck for a run in the top of the first, picking up an unearned run in the bottom half to tie it at 1-1.
The score stayed that way until the sixth inning, with Warriors starter
Michael York (0-2) working through numerous base runners in the second, third and fourth innings to stay even with Broncos starter Kevin Bosson (8-3).
The Broncos had two base runners on with less than two outs three different times and stranded four runners in scoring position in the second through fourth innings, but finally manufactured single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings on two sacrifice flies and an RBI groundout to take a 4-1 lead. They would grow that lead to 7-1 with three important insurance runs in the top of the ninth thanks to three consecutive run-producing at-bats with one out.
Meanwhile, the Warriors had the leadoff batter on three times and had at least two base runners in the inning on four ocassions during the second through eighth innings, but would strand five runners in scoring position and fail to score while the Broncos slowly pulled away in the late innings.
Cal State Stanislaus finally struck for two runs in the bottom of the ninth on two-out RBI hits from
Craig Beevers and
Colt McLaughlin, but the Broncos' insurance runs in the top half of the inning held the Warriors at bay, as closer Cody Ponce shut the door with a strikeout for his sixth save of the season and a 7-3 win.
Three different Warriors had multi-hit performances in the opener, led by
Tynan Pedretti's 3 for 5 showing. McLaughlin went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and
Justin Charles went 2 for 5.
York would go six innings, scattering nine hits and allowing two runs with two strikeouts in the loss.
GAME TWO
Cal Poly Pomona's Ryan Dunn went the distance in the night cap, throwing a seven-inning complete game shutout against the Warriors to win 4-0. He struck out four and walked one while scattering five hits.
The Broncos again scored early, picking up two runs in the first inning on RBI hits by Chris Carlson and Jason Padlo, and scoring another run in the third on an RBI double by Jordan Whitman to take a 3-0 lead.
That was enough for Dunn, who limited the Warriors to three total base runners in the first four innings and just six all game.
The series concludes Sunday with a single game. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
Ross Gonsalves,
Andrew Graves,
Clint Brill,
James Heller and
Matt Chaidez all had base hits for the Warriors.
