Box Score TURLOCK -- Another close game turned into a deficit too large to overcome for the Warriors Sunday, as Cal Poly Pomona scored eight unanswered runs in the sixth through eighth innings to complete a four-game sweep with an 8-1 victory.
Cal State Stanislaus (7-28, 4-24 California Collegiate Athletic Association) took its first lead of the series in the fourth inning.
Justin Charles started the frame with a leadoff double and went to third on a bunt single down the third base line by
Craig Beevers. Charles would come in to score when
Colt McLaughlin grounded into a 4-6-3 double play in the Warriors next at-bat, giving them a 1-0 lead.
Warriors starter
Rafael Vasquez (1-5) cruised through the first five innings of the game, allowing just four total base runners against Cal Poly Pomona (22-15, 15-13 CCAA) and striking out five.
But a throwing error in the sixth would eventually be his undoing. Vasquez retired the first two batters of the inning on groundouts, then gave up a two-out single to Jordan Whitman. He induced a third groundball, but an errant throw allowed Donald Walter reach safely and advance to second, with Whitman moving to third. Two batters later, Jason Padlo drove in two unearned runs against Vasquez with his only hit of the game, a two-RBI single.
Pomona would grow its lead to 7-1 and knock Vasquez out of the game in the seventh. The Warriors struggled with their control on the mound, walking four in the inning and throwing two wild pitches, helping the Broncos tack on five runs on four base hits.
Cal State Stanislaus didn't go quietly however. For the third time in four games, the Warriors scored multiple runs in the bottom of the ninth. Down to their last out, the Warriors got a double from Beevers and a walk on a full count from McLaughlin before
Tynan Pedretti knocked them both in with a double off the left-center field wall.
Klayton Miller would drive in Pedretti with an RBI single before the Warriors were finally retired by the Broncos' third pitcher of the inning, J.J. Franklin.
Beevers finished 2 for 4 with a run scored. Pedretti was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and also scored. Cal Poly Pomona's top three hitters in the order went 6 for 13 with five runs and an RBI.
Cal State Stanislaus continues CCAA play next weekend with a four-game home-and-home series against Sonoma State. The series opens at 11 a.m. Saturday with a doubleheader in Turlock.
