Warriors walk-off for inaugural night game win en route to sweep

2/10/2014 8:38:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK — The inaugural night game at Warrior Baseball Field had its dramatics. In the end, Stanislaus won the contest in walk-off fashion with a 7-6 win over Fresno Pacific.

Marcus Mastrobuoni singled in pinch-runner Anthony Nicolosi to complete the late rally for the victory on the historic night. Mastrobuoni ended up 3-for-4 with four runs batted in in his Warrior home debut.

In the doubleheader nightcap, Mastrobuoni had two more hits and Dayton Mellor went 3-for-4 to lead the Warriors to a 6-5 win to complete the twinbill sweep. Reliever Ryan McDaniel played a huge part in the comeback win in the second game to earn the win on the mound.

Game one starter Nick Ippolito threw well in six-plus innings in the no-decision outing while Aaron Godinez shutout the Sunbirds in the final 2 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

A three-run inning by Fresno Pacific in the seventh inning of game one gave the visiting Sunbirds their first lead at 6-5. But the Warriors got a run back in the eighth on a Colton Beatty squeeze bunt to even the score.

That set-up Mastrobuoni's heroic final at bat. After Brent Hall led off with a solid single to right, pinch runner Anthony Nicolosi moved to second on a passed ball before pinch hitter Charlie Gaff bunted him over to third. Mastrobuoni, a JC transfer catcher from Delta College, took a 0-1 pinch to left for the game-winner.

"I just tried to have a good at bat and be in the moment," Mastrobuoni said. "It was fun environment to play here, under the lights."

Monday's doubleheader marked the first time in program history that the Warriors played a home game under the lights on the campus facility. The inaugural night game was delayed a couple of nights from Saturday's postponement to Monday Night Baseball.

Mellor drove in two runs in the first game as the designated hitter went 2-for-5. Mellor, who also transferred from Delta College, ended up 5-for-9 on the night.

Mellor was in the middle of the hit-parade in the Stanislaus third inning of the nightcap when the Warriors scored five runs to take a 6-4 lead.

The Sunbirds (3-3) chased starter Nick Voumard in the second inning and built a 4-0 lead until McDaniel entered to stop the FPU attack.

After Stanislaus get a run in the second, the Warriors used 11 batters to score five times in the third — a rally that included six straight singles that followed a leadoff walk by Skippy Ferreria. Colt McLaughlin had the biggest hit in the inning, a two-run single through the right side that scored Mellor and Hall.

As for McDaniel, he held the Sunbird offense down again, following his six-plus inning appearance Friday in Fresno against FPU. Monday night, he threw 4 2/3 innings and gave up just two hits and an unearned run. He came in in the second with one out and retired nine consecutive batters until a Joshua Banuelos double in the fifth. Banuelos ultimately came around to score the fifth FPU run.

In the seventh and final inning, leading 6-5, head coach Kenny Leonesio called on Martin Gomez for the save. Gomez faced four batters as he gave up a two-out single to Banuelos but got John Koretoff to groundout to third to end the game.

FPU was led by Banuelos who went 5-for-8. John Koretoff had three RBIs in the first game. The Sunbirds used 10 pitchers in the doubleheader with both starters lasting 3 2/3 innings or less.
