Box Score 2 TURLOCK —
Kristan Burns found a great time to pick up her second hit of the season to break out of the slump. The senior designate player provided the walk-off single in extra innings to lift the Warriors in the nightcap of Friday's CCAA doubleheader.
The Warriors rallied to tie the game in the sixth and won it in the eighth with a final score of 3-2 to pick up the split. Cal State Stanislaus' game two win snapped the Toros' seven-game winning streak, which CSUDH extended with a 5-0 game one win.
Cierrah Mullins made her return to the lineup in game two on Friday and started the eighth inning rally for Stanislaus (4-5, 1-1 CCAA). Mullins led off the inning with a single to left and was moved over on a bunt by
Deenah San Luis.
After a flyout, Burns provided the heroic at-bat. Burns, who had gone 0-for-6 on the day to that point, took the first pitch up the middle to score Mullins.
The winning hit completes the Stanislaus comeback after the Warriors trailed 2-1 through five. The Toros had gone up 1-0 on a solo homer by Ariana Sanchez in the second. CSUDH answered the Warriors' fourth inning when they tied it with a San Luis RBI triple to score Mullins, who had walked.
In the Stanislaus sixth,
Brittney Rickles scored on a sacrifice fly to right by
Amy Droege to even the score.
Starter
Jessica Varady earned her second straight win this week with a complete game victory. She gave up two runs on seven hits in eight innings. While not over powering — she struck out one batter and walked one — she utilized the defense and got outs with 14 groundouts and seven outs in the air.
San Luis ended the nightcap with two hits as did
Brianna Nicholson, who went 2-for-3.
In game one, CCAA pitcher of the week Jamie Duran threw the complete game shutout and gave up five singles. The Toros held a 1-0 lead until the sixth when they struck for four runs on a couple of Stanislaus errors.
Madison Murphy led the Toros with two hits in each game.
The teams will play another doubleheader to complete the four-game series on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
