Box Score TURLOCK — Not much went the Warriors' way on Sunday in the series finale against San Francisco State. Cal State Stanislaus was not able to get the key hits to gain momentum in falling to the Gators, 8-2.
Cal State Stanislaus strung together 13 hits but left a total of 15 runners on base as the Warriors lost the California Collegiate Athletic Association game against San Francisco State, three games to one.
Four Warriors —
Stevie Robinson,
Klayton Miller,
Brent Hall and
Skippy Ferreria — each had two hits but Stanislaus fell to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the CCAA after its third straight loss.
The Warriors left baserunners on base in every inning — and stranded two runners in seven of the nine innings on the day. They were 6-for-26 with runners on base and 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position.
With the score at 2-1, the Warriors had a golden opportunity to tie the game when
Colton Beatty lined a shot to right with Robinson tagging-up to score. SFSU right-fielder Carter Loud threw a bullet to the plate to narrowly get Robinson out to end the inning.
With the bases loaded in the fifth, SFSU starter Nolan Sheridan was able to get a strikeout to end the inning.
Stanislaus had opportunities early before leaving runners on base at the corner in each of the first three innings. Ferreria drove in a run in the second on an infield hit that scored
Eriksen Dickens — who had reached on an error to start the inning.
Then in the seventh, Miller started the inning with a double and stole third with nobody out. But a groundout, an infield pop-up and a weak roller to first base ended that chance.
That frustrating inning for the Warriors fueled San Francisco State as the Gators used eight batters and four hits to score four runs in the top of the eighth. The first six Gators in the inning all reached base with the inning highlighted by a two-run single by Garrett Heisinger.
SF State (8-6, 3-1 CCAA) would add on two more runs on four more hits in the ninth. The Gators collected nine of their 15 hits in the final three innings off three Stanislaus relievers. Loud also went 4-for-5 with a double to lead the SF State offense.
With two outs in the home half of the ninth, four pinch hitters put together a little rally to plate Stanislaus' second run.
Tanner Negrette drove in
James Heller, who singled ahead of
Anthony Nicolosi, who was hit by a pitch.
Nick Ippolito didn't get the run support and suffered the loss in six innings of work.
Ryan McDaniel was knocked around for the first time this season as he gave up four runs on five hits in the eighth after as he got three outs in the seventh.
For the series, the Warriors stranded a total of 36 baserunners — 28 in the three losses.
