Box Score 2 TURLOCK — For the second consecutive doubleheader, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team rebounds from a game one loss to win game two of the doubleheader by dominating the opponents.
The Warriors took the late-nightcap Tuesday by winning game two, 10-2, in six innings over Notre Dame de Namur. NDNU won the game one marathon, 5-4, in 10 innings.
The doubleheader, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday but moved up a day due to forecasted rain, started under the lights at 4:30 p.m. and did not end until nearly 10:30 p.m.
Deenah San Luis was the hitting star for the Warriors on the night as the third baseman went 6-for-8 with three hits in each game. She had two triples and drove in five runs in the twinbill.
Amy Droege picked up a pair of hits and drove in three scored in the second game.
Cassidy Duke and
Brianna Nicholson also had a pair of hits in the nightcap.
In game one, after the teams quickly traded zeros for five fast pace innings to start the evening, NDNU (7-8) got on the board in the top of the sixth.
Stanislaus tied the score in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single by
Brittney Rickles to force extra innings.
Nothing really happened until an evenful and dramatic 10th inning. The Argonauts used nine batters to push across four runs on three hits and three walks in the top half. The rally was highlighted by a two-run double by Courtney Azevedo.
The Warriors made the bottom of the 10th interesting despite trailing by four runs. After a leadoff walk by Rickles,
Kristan Burns also drew the walk after two outs. Droege then singled to load the bases to allow San Luis to hit with the bags full of Warriors. San Luis took a shot to right-center field for a bases-clearing triple to make it 5-4.
With the tying run at second and the slugger Nicholson at the plate, the senior first baseman nearly became the hero with a walk-off homer. Her deep shot, on 0-2 count, to right was caught at the fence by Amanda Wallach to end the game.
Jessica Varady threw nine innings in the opener to pick up the loss.
In game two, after Breanna Young gave NDNU a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo homer, the Warriors battled behind the arm of
Natalie Rendon.
Rendon pitched one of her better games of the year as she gave up one earned run on five hits in six innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out six for the win.
With the score at 3-2, the Warriors put together a crooked 7-run inning in the six to end the game by with a mercy rule victory.
Droege drove in two runs with a double while Duke,
Natalie Winters and
Melissa Robles all singled in runs as part of the seven-hit inning that saw 11 Stanislaus batters at the plate.
Last Saturday, after losing game one, the Warriors beat Chico State, 11-3, in five innings to end the series. The Saturday prior, Stanislaus also sent Cal State Dominguez Hills home with a night-cap, 12-0, win in five innings.
