Box Score TURLOCK — In the match-up of the conference's top hitting team versus the best pitching team, the pitchers win out in this series as No. 11 Chico State took the rubber game of the series, 4-1, to complete the sweep.
Marcos Lara out-duel Stanislaus ace
Jeremy McDonald and Chico closer Luke Barker closed out the Warriors late as Chico State improved to 20-5 overall and 12-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
With the CCAA best team ERA of 2.25 entering Sunday's game, Chico State continues its current run with 14 wins in its last 16 games and has now won eight straight games.
Meanwhile, the Warriors entered the weekend with CCAA's best team batting average of .294, but will end up with a .286 after dropping all four games.
On Sunday, the Stanislaus bats were silenced by Lara through the first 13 batters. In fact, Lara was cruising and faced the minimum until
Clint Brill's fifth inning, one-out single to break-up the perfect game.
The Warriors' best scoring chance in the game was the seventh. After two outs, three consecutive singles by
Brent Hall,
Klayton Miller and
Matt Chaidez put the Warriors on the board. After
Tanner Negrette got hit by a pinch to load the bases, Stanislaus had its best hitter in
Skippy Ferreria at the plate for a golden opportunity.
However, Ferreria, who still leads the CCAA with a .420 average, grounded to short for the force out at second to end the inning.
Barker threw the final two innings and gave up just a hit for his third save in the series. He now has eight saves.
Showing some team balance, the first eight batters in the Chico lineup each had at least a hit with Peter Miller going 0-for-2.
Martin Gomez pitched 2 2/3 of hitless baseball in relief for the Warriors (8-18, 4-15 CCAA), who will take next weekend off from the CCAA schedule and host Academy of Art for a three-game set starting on Friday.
