Box Score TURLOCK —
Cameron Irinaga made his first collegiate start on Sunday and the freshman from Modesto helped supplied the offense as Cal State Stanislaus defeated Academy of Art, 8-7, in walkoff fashion in the 10th inning.
Skippy Ferreria delivered the game-winning single up the middle as the bouncer hops over AAU shortstop Kalani Brackenridge to score
Stevie Robinson for the victory.
Cal State Stanislaus won both games completed in the series to improve to 10-18 overall. Game three of set, and the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, was washed out due to rain. The nightcap actually got started at 7:02 p.m. but heavy rain forced the game to be canceled after a 15-minute rain delay in the top of the second inning.
Irinaga, normally a bullpen catcher, got a start as the designated hitter on Sunday and he took advantaged of the opportunity. He went 3-for-4 with a walk and drove in two runs. With the performance, he earned another start, as the catcher batting fifth, in the nightcap before the rain came.
Irinaga's second inning double — his first collegiate hit — to deep centerfield scored
Brent Hall. Then in the sixth his single down the left field line plated Hall again, who had doubled ahead of Irinaga to even the score at 5-5.
Irinaga's third hit on the day came in the eighth inning with the Warriors trailing 7-6. Robinson replaced Irinaga and stole second and third before scoring on a heads-up play with one out to tie the game.
Charlie Gaff grounded out weakly to first but forced a tag-play to allow Robinson to score from third to tie the game.
In the 10th, Robinson ledoff with a walk and moved to second on a bunt. Academy of Art (8-22) decided to walk Gaff intentionally to turn the lineup over to face leadoff man Ferreria.
Ferreria, the CCAA's leading hitter, bounced a 3-2 pitch up the middle to score the winner.
Colton Beatty and
Dayton Mellor each also had two hits for the Warriors.
Starter
Nick Voumard pitched four innings and gave up five runs — only two earned — on four hits. David Snapped pitched 2 1/3 innings and
Martin Gomez pitched the last 3 2/3 innings to earn the win. Gomez only gave up a hit — a seventh inning double — and a run with two strikeouts in his outing.
Cal State Stanislaus survivesd a messy game in which the Warriors committed five errors. Only three of the seven runs scored by the Urban Knights were earned by the pitchers.
Brackenridge had two of the AAU's seven hits and Kevin Decker drove in two runs to lead the Urban Knights. Dylan Rodrigues was charged with the loss as he pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
Cal State Stanislaus is next in action on Tuesday in an exhibition game against the Modesto Nuts, the Colorado Rockies' Class A minor league team. First pitch at John Thurman Field in Modesto is at 7:05 p.m.
