Coyotes take two in first conference night games at CSUS

3/7/2014 9:28:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK — The Warriors played a pair of CCAA games under the lights for the first time in program history but the visiting Coyotes spoiled the momentous occasion with the twinbill sweep.

Cal State San Bernardin's pitchers out-lasted the Warriors' arms as the Coyotes won 6-5 in game one and 12-3 in six innings in game two.

The Warriors dropped to 8-13 overall and 4-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association while the Coyotes improved to 13-8, 7-5 in CCAA play.

The Coyotes offense was as good as advertised in the doubleheader as they sprayed 21 hits — 14 in game two. CSUSB entered the night with a team batting average of .343, led Nicole Nobbe (.533). Nobbe was 3-for-5 on the night with a pair of RBIs. CSUSB also entered the week with 21 homers, led by Tiffany McIntosh's nine.

But it was Victory Lievanos who belted a three-run homer in the third inning of game two to erase a 3-1 Stanislaus lead. The Warriors had score three times in the first inning with triples by Deenah San Luis and Cierrah Mullins. Cassidy Duke and Kristan Burns also singled in the three-run, four-hit inning for the Warriors.

However, CSUSB scored in every inning except for the first en route to the six-inning win. Thalia Ortiz had three hits for CSUSB in the nightcap.

In the circle, the Coyotes got wins behind starters Cassandra Williams, in game one, and Stephanie Luhman in game two. Williams struck out 10 batters in the first game to increase her seson total to 50 in 70 innings.

The Warriors pitching staff started out strong, especially in game one. Karina Callazo started in place of Jessica Varady, who was sidelined with a stomach illness. She cruised for four innings with just one baserunner reaching second base while the offense gave her a 5-0 lead after two innings.

Mullins doubled to score two runs in the first and a two-run homer by Brittney Rickles highlighted a Stanislaus three-run second for the early 5-0 lead in the opener.

But CSUSB got to the pitching staff in the fifth by sending 10 batters to the plate to score all six runs on four hits, a pair of walks and a hit-batter off three different CSUS pitchers.

In game two, Natalie Rendon was tagged with the loss for the first time in three starts.

Offensively, the Warriors finished the night with nine total hits. Duke, Burns and Mullins were the only Warriors with multiple hits in the doubleheader, each with a pair.

Saturday's doubleheader will start at 11 a.m.
