Stanislaus baseball ends streak with nightcap win

3/8/2014 4:33:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD — At last, a victory and a win on the road. The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors finally ended a couple of bad streaks with a doubleheader split at Cal State East Bay on Saturday.

Perhaps this will turn the early-season struggles around as the Warriors beat the Pioneers, 4-1, in game two of the twinbill at Pioneer Field. Cal State East Bay won another close contest in game one, 4-1.

The Warriors (6-11, 2-8 CCAA) snapped an eight-game losing streak and earned their first win on the road in nine games this season.

Playing little ball, the Warriors scrapped together a run in the first inning of game two to get ahead 1-0. Skippy Ferreria, who was hit by a pitch to start the game, ended up at third after two grounders and scored on a fielder's choice.

The Warriors made it 2-0 in the second on a single by Ferreria to score Klayton Miller, who had led off the inning with a single and eventually moved over on a wild pitch and a bunt, to make it 2-0.

Stanislaus then needed just one hit to pushed for two runs in the fifth on four walks, a couple of stolen bases, a balk and two fielder's choice grounders. Eriksen Dickens drove in two runs with the only hit in the inning — a single to left — to make it 2-0.

That was what starter Nick Voumard needed as he left with a 2-0 lead through four. Dustin Baisdon allowed just one hit in three innings to close the door and earn the save.

Cal State Stanislaus lost game one despite out-hitting CSUEB, 7-6. Brandon Alexander's two-run double in the eighth inning to extend the Pioneers to 4-1.

Ferreria went 3-for-4 and Dickens was 2-for-3 in the first game. Ferreria was 4-for-5 with two doubles and scored three runs plus three stolen bases on the day. Dickens was 3-for-7 with three RBIs.

The fourth and final game of the four-game series is slated for a Noon start, after Daylight Saving Time adjustment, on Sunday at Warrior Baseball Field in Turlock.
