Box Score TURLOCK — The Warriors didn't have many scoring opportunities on a day when they only had a few baserunners. But they still had a chance in a low-scoring affair. In the end, the Cal State East Bay Pioneers squeaked out a 2-1 win in the series finale on Sunday.
Cal State Stanislaus managed four singles and seven total baserunners on the day in the final game of the four-game set. But another one-run loss resulted in lowering the Warriors' overall record to 6-12 and 2-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Five of the last six Warrior losses were by three runs or less.
The Warriors offense again went quiet as Cal State East Bay starter Michael Pope gave up just one run on four hits in eight innings. East Bay improved to 12-8, 6-6 CCAA in winning three games in the series.
Still, trailing just 2-1, the Warriors had their chances late in the game.
Skippy Ferreria was standing at second after a single and stolen base with one out. After
Nick Ippolito fouled out,
Colton Beatty reached on a high throw by the Pioneer shortstop to set up runners at the corner with two outs.
But Pope got a grounder out of
Eriksen Dickens, who had three hits on Saturday, to end the inning.
Stanislaus had runners on the seventh and eighth as well, but came up empty.
The Warriors got their lone run in the second on a RBI single by
Dayton Mellor that plated
Klayton Miller, who singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
But the Pioneers scored twice in the fifth to take the lead and eventually the win. CSUEB used four consecutive singles — including three straight grounders up the middle — to score the two runs.
McDonald suffered the loss after eight innings of work where he allowed two runs on nine hits.
Ryan McDaniel pitched a one-hit ninth.
Cal State Stanislaus has dropped all four (and 0-3 at home) Sunday games this season.
The Warriors will host Cal State San Bernardino next weekend for a four game series. Game one is under the lights at 6 p.m. on Friday.
