#24 UC San Diego uses big innings to beat Warriors

4/11/2014 9:56:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK — Just as the Warriors rallied back to make it a game, the 24th ranked UC San Diego Tritons used a big sixth inning en route to a 13-4 win over Cal State Stanislaus Friday night.

The Warriors, in another rebuidling year along with the constructions and upgrades at Warrior Baseball Field, fell to 11-22 overall and 5-19 in conference play after the four-game series opening loss.

However, the Warriors were competitive in the game after answering UCSD's three-run fifth with its own three-run inning to make it 4-3 heading into the sixth. Then things fell apart for the Warriors.

UC San Diego (22-11 and 18-7 CCAA) sent 11 batters to the plate and used five hits and two Warrior errors to score six times to make it 10-3. A two-run triple by Erik Lewis followed by three straight singles keyed the Tritons inning.

Stanislaus would get a run back against UCSD ace Justin Donatella in the sixth on a RBI single by Dayton Mellor but the Tritons tagged on three more scores in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Mellor finished with three singles and Colton Beatty also went 3-for-5. Marcus Mastrobuoni stayed hot with two more hits and drove in two runs. Mastrobuoni is now batting .402 this season, surpassing previous leader Skippy Ferreria. Ferreria snapped his current seven-game hitting streak with a 0-for-4 night.

Jeremy McDonald was charged with the loss but only gave up three hits in 4 1/3 innings. However, the southpaw struggled with the walks as he allowed six free passes and also hit a batter. Donatella improved to 6-1 but not until he gave up 11 hits. Entering the game, Donatella had allowed just 28 hits in 49 innings pitched.

Troy Cruz went 3-for-3 and Brett Levy drove in four runs, including a bases cleaning three-run double in the eighth to lead the Tritons.

The series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
