Box Score 2 TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus softball team out-slugged Dominican as the Warriors took game one of Sunday's non-conference doubleheader at Warrior Softball Field.
The Warriors put together 10 hits, and behind the pitching of freshman starter
Karina Callazo, Stanislaus won game one, 6-3. The Warriors rallied back in the nightcap and had the game-winning run on base before falling 6-4 for the split.
It was certainly a team effort in game one on the day in the 6-3 win as eight different Warriors hit safely.
Amy Droege and
Morgan Balestreri each had two hits. Droege had a run-scoring double in the first inning that followed a triple by
Melissa Robles to make the 2-0.
Kristan Burns' pinch hit double in the third inning capped off a three-run inning for the Warriors as they grabbed a 5-1 lead.
Callazo went the distance and gave up one earned run on seven hits to improve to 5-5. She also had seven strikeouts and walked six batters.
In game two, Dominican scored four times in the first off starter
Natalie Rendon and tagged on single runs in the second and fifth innings for a 6-0 lead. Dominican pitcher Karly Harris allowed a single in the first inning to
Natalie Winters before retiring 14 consecutive batters — until the sixth.
The Warriors rallied in the sixth to score three times to cut the lead in half. A walk and a single by Balestreri set-up the innings, then with two outs, the Warriors put runs on the board. A double by Robles and back-to-back singles by
Cierrah Mullins and Droege made it 6-3.
After a shut-down inning by reliever
Jessica Varady, the Warriors cooked up some final-inning drama.
In the home half of the seventh, the Warriors had the opportunity to win. Again, after two quick outs, the rally started with a throwing error by the Dominican (19-22) shortstop to put Balestreri at second. She would score on a single to center by pinch-hitter
Danielle Kelm. Another single by Winters and a walk later, the bases were loaded for Mullins with the chance to tie or win with a walk-off.
However, Harris got Mullins to line out softly to short to end the game. Balestreri and Droege each had three hits in the doubleheader.
The Warriors (13-34) return the CCAA action next weekend with a four-game set at Cal State East Bay, Friday and Saturday.
Winters finished with two of the team's seven hits in game two.
