Warriors drop twinbill to No. 6 Humboldt State

4/26/2014 8:27:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK — With Humboldt State trying to stay in the hunt to pick up the top seed in the CCAA tournament with four wins, the Warriors were poised to not allow that to happen on their home turf. However, in the end, that Lumberjack quest ended up not in play even though HSU won both games of the doubleheader on Saturday.

After waiting an extra day and couple of extra hours to start the series, the Lumberjacks scored early in both games en route to the 3-0 and 7-2 victories. Humboldt State, the No. 6 ranked team in the country by the NFCA, improved to 43-11 overall and 27-7 in the CCAA. HSU needed four wins or a combination of its wins and Cal State Monterey Bay losses to secure first place going into the postseason. However, Cal State Monterey Bay took cared of business on its own, winning all four games against Cal State San Bernardino to move up to 44-7 overall and 25-6 in conference play.

Humboldt State will be the No. 2 seed in the CCAA tournament, which is next week in Stockton.

For the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors, they were trying to finish the season on a high note as they celebrated Strikeout Cancer Day wearing pink jerseys. It is also Family Weekend as part of the Senior Day celebration on Sunday.

On Saturday, HSU got out on top 3-0 in the first but Karina Callazo settled down against the mighty Lumberjacks. The freshman hurler only gave up three singles after the three-run first. She only faced two batters over the minimum after the second inning.

Katie Obbema improved to 21-7 but did not dominate. She gave up three hits and struckout six in seven innings. The Warriors put two runners on base in the third with one out but came up empty. In the seventh inning, Stanislaus again had two baserunners with two outs but Obbema got the final batter to strikeout.

In the nightcap, the Lumberjacks plated four runs in the second en route to the 7-2 win. Darina Harris had four hits in two games to lead HSU offensively.

Cierrah Mullins went 2-for-3 with a double and Amy Droege drove in two runs to lead the Warriors in game two. Droege sent in a run with a foulout in the fourth and doubled in Mullins in the sixth. Cassidy Duke was the only Warrior to have at least a hit in each game.

Sunday's season finale doubleheader, when the Warriors will recognize seniors Mullins, Brittney Rickles, Kristan Burns, Brianna Nicholson and Droege, starts at 11 a.m.
