Series Notes: The Warriors beat Cal State L.A. twice out of three meetings in 2013-14 and won this season's first meeting. The Warriors are now 13-22 against the Golden Eagles (8-8 at home). Stanislaus beat L.A., 66-49 in Turlock last season.
Last Time We Met... was Dec. 5 in L.A., where the Warriors on 64-55 to open CCAA play.
Chris Read scored 13 points with 2 blocks, 4 steals and 4 assists to lead CSUS.
About the Golden Eagles: Cal State L.A. dropped both games last week (Sonoma State and SF State) … The Golden Eagles rank last in CCAA games in points and points per game (59.1) … Labradford Franklin leads the team with 9.9 points a game.
Staying at the TopAfter spending a week alone atop of the CCAA standings, the Warriors now find themselves in a three-way tie for first again after last week's split. Stanislaus shares the lead with Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State, all at 9-3, one game ahead of UC San Diego (8-4). The fifth place team, Humboldt State is 6-6.
Four-Game Win-Streak SnappedThe Warriors were upset on Friday, ending a four-game winning streak they had built during the previous homestand. They begin a new four-game set Friday and look for more success at home, where they are 5-1 this season (12-2 at Fitzpatrick Arena in 2013-14) … Cal State Stanislaus reamins one of the hottest teams in the conference with seven wins in its last nine games.
Nice Bounce-Back GameCal State Stanislaus bounced back from a disappointing game on Friday with a nice all-around effort on Saturday at Cal State East Bay. The Warriors used a hot second half (64% shooting) to roll the Pioneers for the 77-67 win. Four players were in double-digit in scoring, led by
Wes Bartole and
Shey Mataele, each with 13 points.
Best Game for Shey, So FarShey Mataele enjoyed his best game this season on Saturday when he scored 13 points with seven rebounds and six assists. The senior was 6 of 10 from the field shooting. The seven rebounds is also a career-high.
Otter Sync in MontereyThe Warriors were out-of-sync and suffered a 20-point defeat on Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay. It was their biggest margin of defeat since losing to No. 11 California Baptist on Nov. 29. The Stanislaus offense never got going (and shot just 40 percent for the game after a 52 percent second half) while CSUMB made 53.4 percent of its shots.
Winning TrendsThe Warriors definitely have a trend for winning games. They are undefeated in games when they are shooting better than the opponent; when they have fewer turnovers; is leading at halftime; and has a lead with five minutes left to play. Stanislaus is also a perfect 10-0 this season when scoring 61 points or more … They have also outrebounded opponents 12 times and are 11-1 in those contests.
Bigger Crowds ExpectedLarger, and near capacity crowds, are expected during this four-game homestand with the spring semester now in session. The team's success, larger student population, and improved game enviroment and fan entertainment have all contributed to large attendances during the last month (during winter break). Athletics administration is expecting a potential sellout crowd on Friday, Feb. 6, on homecoming night.
