TURLOCK — Against a short-handed Hawaii Hilo team, the Warriors played their own game and held court as Cal State Stanislaus defeated the visiting Vulcans, 8-1, in women's tennis on a nice sunny Wednesday afternoon.
The Warriors held off Hawaii Hilo in two closely contested doubles matches for the early lead. Then the top three singles players rolled through their matches to lead Cal State Stanislaus as the Warriors improved to 3-7 on the season.
Post-match Interview with
Jessica Laurie:
Hawaii Hilo only traveled five players thus having to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches prior to the start of the day. At No. 5 singles,
Ebone Qualls' opponent Shayli Lim had to retire due to injury.
Jessica Laurie and
J'Ana Diamond faced a decent challenge from the top duo from UHH at No. 1 doubles before posting a 9-7 win. Qualls and
Analyssa Tallas, too, won by a narrow margin of 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, the top three Warriors had an easier time with straight set wins. Laurie defeated Trixit Croad, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Diamond took down Rachel Sugiyama, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Tallas then defeated Shanise Kaaikala, 6-3, 6-2, to account for the victories.
The Warriors' busy week continues at home on Saturday in a Noon match against Academy of Art, currently ranked No. 11 in the newest ITA poll released today. On Sunday, the team will travel to Rohnert Park for its fourth match of the week at No. 24 Sonoma State. On Tuesday, Stanislaus hosted No. 23 Cal State L.A.
Interview with
Analyssa Tallas and
Ebone Qualls:
Instead of Saturday's match being the home finale. A couple of schedule changes were made today extending the Warriors' season. Stanislaus will now host two home matches against Notre Dame de Namur on April 13 and April 18.
