This Week's Opponent
Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (1-1)
Series Notes: The Toros have a 19-17 advantage over the Warriors in the head-to-head series, but Stanislaus has won five of the last six meetings since January of 2014 … Stanislaus is 11-9 at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Last Time We Met... was on Feb. 27, in the Warriors' home finale. Stanislaus won 80-75 behind a 25-point, 11-rebound night from Kyle Gouveia. Vondel Faniel also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
About the Toros: The Toros begin 1-1 after splitting games at the PacWest/CCAA Challenge at Riverside last weekend. CSUDH beat Holy Names, 72-71, before losing to No. 9 California Baptist, 93-79 … Justin Sadler averaged 18.5 points in those games. He had 23 against Holy Names … CSUDH is at Cal Poly on Thursday in an exhibition game.
This One Counts, But Not in CCAA
The Warriors and the Toros will square off in their first of three meetings this season on Saturday, but this one doesn't count towards the CCAA standings. It will be a non-conference game on Saturday before the teams meet twice more later in the year during the conference portion of the schedule.
SF State Tip-Off Classic
The Warriors went 0-2, in two heartbreaking, closing games, last weekend at the Tip-Off Classic in San Francisco. San Francisco State won both of its games to win its own tournament.
Preseason Tournaments
The Warriors will play in one more preseason tournament next week at the NDNU Thanksgiving Classic in Belmont. Prior to this past week in San Francisco, the last time the Warriors played in a preseason tournament was at the start of the 2014-15 season. They went 2-0 at the Preseason Challenge at Dominican with wins over the host school and Montana State Billings. That same preseason, Stan State participated in the CBU Classic in Riverside and went 0-2 against to Top 20 ranked teams (Dixie State and California Baptist)
Nice Warrior Debut for Mitchell
Kaelen Mitchell certainly made an impressive splash during his debut games as a Warrior. The Grossmont College transfer led the team in scoring both nights, tallying 38 points on 14 of 30 shooting. He scored 17 in game one and bettered that mark with a 21-point total Saturday by making five three-pointers. Mitchell was named to the All-Tournament team for his performances.
Raining Treys
Stan State took a lot of three-pointers over the weekend, particular Saturday against Academy of Art. Against Art U, the Warriors took 35 three-pointers and made 14 of them (40 percent). Stan State was led by Richard Medina (6) and Kaelen Mitchell (5) beyond the arch.
Funky "Hot" Medina
Richard Medina had his career game on Saturday, nailing a personal-best six three-pointers for 18 points. He only took treys on the night, converting on 6 of 13 after going 1 for 4 from long distance Friday night. He also added four steals to his stat sheet against Academy of Art.
Dishin' Evans
Stephen Evans recorded 11 assists in Saturday's overtime game against Art U, the most for a Warrior in a single game since Sam Marcus recorded 11 on Jan. 11, 2013. He also had five assists on Friday for a 7.5 assists per game average thus far.
The Same Exact Line-Up
In two games, and the exhibition contest last week against UC Merced, head coach Larry Reynolds has employed the same starting line-up all three times. He's featured Stephen Evans at the point guard with Richard Medina and Kaelen Mitchell as the shooting guard/small forward. The two bigs inside have been Vondel Faniel and Kyle Gouveia.
Solid Starters
The starting five look to be working out just fine as they scored 80 of the 85 points on Saturday and 48 of the 58 points on Friday. That's 89.5 percent of the offense coming from the starters.
