Warriors Notes
CCAA Tournament Within Reach:Â Stanislaus State is just one game out of eighth place for a CCAA tournament berth and the team they are chasing is their Thursday opponent. The Golden Eagles are 7-11 in the CCAA with the Warriors at 6-12. Stan State's odds got better after Cal State San Marcos was "removed" from the standings as the Cougars are not eligible for postseason play during their transition into Division II.
More Playoff Senarios:Â If the Warriors end up tied with Cal State L.A. (it can only happen if the Warriors win Thursday night at LA) in the final regular season standings, the Warriors would have the tiebreaker over the Golden Eagles having won twice in head-to-head play.
Oh What A Weekend:Â The Warriors pulled off an exciting weekend with wins over elites Cal Poly Pomona and Humboldt State. First, they snapped an 11-game losing streak by beating the Lumberjacks in triple overtime on Friday. Then, they shocked the 20th ranked Broncos in (just one) overtime on Saturday.
A Lot of Free Basketball:Â Stanislaus State is now 4-1 in overtime games this season. The Warriors have also won four straight multiple-OT games dating back to the 2013-14 season. The last time the Warriors played in a triple OT game was on Feb. 2, 2007, when they lost to UC San Diego in four overtimes (116-103) in Turlock.
Player of the Week Bayne:Â Christian Bayne was awarded the CCAA's Men's Basketball Player of the Week Award as he continues to lead the Warriors. Bayne nearly averaged a triple-double with 24 points, 8.5 rebounds and nine assists per game. He scored a career-high 27 in the win over HSU and followed with a game-high 21 points with 10 assists (first career double-double) on Saturday.
Career Night Warriors:Â A bunch of Warriors had to have career nights for them to upset two of the best teams. These include Christian Bayne's 27 points, Vondel Faniel's 21, Joey Bennett's 19, and Stephen Evans's 17 points against Humboldt State. Versus Cal Poly Pomona, Kyle Gouveia netted a career-high with 21 points while Faniel pulled a personal best 15 rebounds.
Bennett Breaks Through:Â Joey Bennett enjoyed his best back-to-back nights in his career as he scored a total of 29 points on 10 of 17 shooting. On Friday, he nearly won the game at the regulation buzzer with a lay-up in traffic; then nailed a three-pointer to send the game into the third OT.
Hit the Century Mark:Â The Warriors surprised a lot of people on Friday with 108 points from a team that averaged 65.5 points a game for the season. So what it took 15 extra minutes of play to go over 100 (game was tied at 66, 76, 90). It marked the first time Stan State scored 100-plus points during a CCAA game since Feb. 2, 2007, in the four-OT loss against UC San Diego, when the Warriors scored 103 (116-103).
