Stan State looks for more wins at home vs. UCSD, CSUSB

The Warrior men are home for the last time for a full weekend of games as they host UC San Diego on Friday and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.

UC San Diego TRITONS (14-4, 9-2 CCAA)
Series Notes:
The Warriors have had some recent success against UCSD with a 10-2 record since January of 2011. Stan State leads all-time 17-15.

Last Time We Met... was in La Jolla on Dec. 30 when #23 UCSD defeated the Warriors, 67-57. The Warriors were within two points with six minutes left to play that night.

About the Tritons: UCSD has lost two straight games after a seven-game winning streak. The Tritons' last game was a 72-67 loss at home to Cal State San Marcos … Adam Klie leads the team with 14.4 points and 7.0 rebounds a game … UCSD is the best free throw shooting team in the CCAA at 74.6 percent.


Cal State San Bernardino COYOTES (8-7, 4-6 CCAA)
Series Notes: 
CSUSB has won two straight in the series to improve to 28-10 against the Warriors. Stanislaus won the last two meetings in Turlock.

Last Time We Met... was on Dec. 29 in San Bernardino. The Coyotes won 59-56 in a late rally. Kyle Gouveia led the Warriors with 14 points, 9 rebounds and Vondel Faniel pulled 11 rebounds with 8 points.

About the Coyotes: CSUSB is coming off a huge scoring game in a 106-100 win over Cal State San Marcos for its second straight win … Everett Turner had 23 points in that game and now averages 12.3 points per game … Khleem Perkins averages 12.1 points a game.
 

Better at Home
The Warriors are now 4-4 in games played at home at Fitzpatrick Arena, where they will get four more chances this season. During the CCAA era, the Warriors are 131-113 when playing in their home gym.

One of the Top Defenses
We already knew that the Warriors have one of the best defenses in the CCAA. They rank third in points allowed (65.2) and has the confernce's top stat of opponents' field goal percentage during CCAA games (.389). However, did you know that the Warriors' D is also among the best in NCAA Division II? In all games, Stan State has held opponents to a 39.1 percent shooting, which is the eighth best in the country. The Warriors' 65.5 points a game allowed is the 14th best mark.

CCAA Teams Play Defense
Three of the top four teams in Division II as far as Scoring Defense (points allowed per game) play in the CCAA. Sonoma State boasts the top defense in the country, allowing just 58.4 points a game. Chico State is third (62.9) followed by UC San Diego (63.7). Stanislaus State (14th, 65.5) and San Francisco State (16th, 65.8) give the CCAA five teams in the top 16. Alaska Anchorage (6th, 63.9) and Hawaii Pacific (10th, 64.5) are the only other West Region teams in the top 40.

Faniel Doubles-Up Twice More
Vondel Faniel recorded two more double-doubles last weekend, bring his season total  to six double-doubles (and 10 in career). He has posted double-doubles in three straight games and has scored in double digits in five consecutive outings. In the last five games, Faniel has averaged 17.2 points and 10.8 rebounds.

High Percentage Shots
Vondel Faniel
leads the CCAA in field goal percentage, hitting 63.3 percent of his shots in all games and 59.6 percent during CCAA contests. His 63.3 percentage is tied for 12th best in Division II.

Controlling the Glass 
The Warriors out-rebounded Humboldt State 53-30 on Saturday, marking it the fifth time they have out-rebounded opponents by double digits. It was also the second time in three games they out-boarded teams by 20 or more.

Taking Advantage of Free Shots
Aside from rebounding and out-shooting Humboldt State on the floor, the Warriors also took advantage of their free throw chances. They converted on 25 of 38 free throw attempts while HSU only got to try five free throws (made two) … Jaelen Ragsdale made 10 of 14 free throw against HSU on Saturday. He leads the team (and is 13th in the CCAA) with a 78.4 percentage from the charity stripe.

Reynolds against UC San Diego
Head coach Larry Reynolds have had a lot of success against UC San Diego during his career. Prior to Stan State, he was 4-0 against UCSD as head coach at Cal State San Bernardino. Since joining the Warriors' staff, he's 10-5 versus the Tritons. The only other team Reynolds has defeated with a higher percentage is Cal State East Bay (14-1).

Oh, That 60-point Mark
Stan State continues to struggle to get a victory when scoring less than 60 points. The Warriors are now 0-11 in those games while going 6-1 in games when they score 61 or more points.

Closing out Games
The Warriors are also having trouble staging a comeback late in the game. When trailing with 5:00 remaining, they are now 0-11. Last Thursday was the first time they lost a game when leading at the 5-minute mark.
