Warriors focus on final exams before non-conference games

During the CCAA bye week (and Finals week), the Warriors will take it easy as they will play two non-conference contests. Stan State travels to take on Cal Maritime on Saturday and hosts Seattle Pacific on Monday.

Passing Grade, so Far
As the Warriors prepares for finals weeks, academically, they have earned a passing grade through 10 games this season thus far on the courts. The Wariors are in third place with a 8-2 and 5-2 CCAA records. With a lighter schedule load, the Warriors can focus on final exams before Saturday's short away game.

Best Start in CCAA Era
At 8-2, the Warriors are off to their best start since the program became a NCAA Division II scholarship institution in 1998-99. The previous best was 7-3, in 2013-14. That team won the next four games for an 11-3 start en route to the NCAA tournament run.

Gouveia Dominates Inside
Kyle Gouveia
scored 20 points in Saturday's win at Sonoma State on 8 of 11 shooting. Impressively, seven of his eight shots were layups with the other a short jumper in the paint. He led the Warriors' inside game as Stan State out-scored Sonoma State, 30-16, in the paint … Gouveia now has five career 20-plus point games and has scored in double-digits 28 times.

Winning on The Road
After their road sweep this past week, including a second straight win in Arcata, the Warriors are now 4-1 in away games and improved to 2-1 in CCAA contests away from Turlock. Historically, the Warriors have not done well in away conference games. They were 6-5 in these games during the 2014-15, 2011-12 and 2006-07 seasons — the only three times they had a winning record. Stanislaus made the CCAA tournament in both 2014-15 and 2011-12 (no postseason tournament in 2006-07).

In the Rankings
With an solid 8-2 record, the Warriors could get a look at the National poll (NABC Top 25). In case you are wondering, the Warriors have never been ranked nationally … Stan State is seventh in the D2SIDA West Region poll, conducted by the SIDs in the region.

Defense Continues to Improve
The Warriors have stepped-up on their defensive efforts of late, especially in the last two weeks. Stan State is now third best in scoring defense, allowing just 66.3 points per game during CCAA games. Opponents are shooting just 39.3 percent, also third lowest in league.

Turnover Margin
One of the keys to success has been the Warriors' turnover margin. Stan State is at plus-2.43 and had fewer turnovers in 9 out of 10 games. The only time they had more turnovers was last Thursday at Humboldt when the Warriors had eight versus HSU's seven.

Near-Perfect at the Line
Perhaps it was a jinx, but Vida Faniel's consecutive free throw made streak ended at 21 when he missed his first attempt last Thurday at Humboldt State. He is starting a new streak with five consecutive made, which meant he's converted on 26 of last 27 attempts. He's 27 of 29 for the season (.931) … Andy Cleaves connected on 84.4 percent of his foul shots (27-for-32).
