The Stanislaus State baseball team hosts two of the four games of the series against No. 9 ranked Chico State as both teams begin the conference season on Friday. The series shifts to Chico for a doubleheader on Sunday after game two.

SERIES NOTES: Chico State has won five straight head-to-head in the series, including ending the Warriors' 2017 season at the CCAA Championship tournament. The Warriors last beat Chico State on May 8, 2016 in Turlock (took 3 of 4 in the series). Chico holds a 59-22 record over the Warriors since 1999.

WITHIN THE RANKS: Northwest Nazarene received votes in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll, posted on Dec. 20 … CCAA teams UC San Diego (#7), Chico State (#9) and Cal Poly Pomona (#14) are in the top 15.

LARGE JACKS TWO: Jack Large hit two home runs last week at Cal State L.A. as a part of his solid offensive series. He went 7-for-15 with a double, two homers and drove in four runs against the Golden Eagles. He has not hit safely in all six games this season.

OFFENSIVE NUGGETS: Braeden Oki has reach base safely in all six games … Cody Kruip was 5-for-9 in two games at Cal State L.A. He leads the team with a .632 on-base percentage … The Warriors hit .336 against Cal State L.A. They scored 23 runs on 38 hits (12 extra base hits) in the series. 

STELLAR PITCHING: Joe Ryan improved to 2-0 with another solid start last Friday. His ERA is now 0.82 … Chase Wheatcroft (0.00 ERA) now has three saves in three chances … In four appearances Jarrett Veiga has not yielded a run in 4 2/3 innings.

CHICO STATE (4-2) NOTES: Chico State took 2 of 3 from Northwest Nazarene last weekend … Dustin Miller is 9-for-20 (.450) with a homer and five runs batted in … As team the Wildcats are batting .276 with a team ERA of 3.42 … The three Chico starting pitchers — Casey Costelo (12 strikeouts), Grant Larson (17) and Hilario Tovar (17) —  have dominated hitters with 46 strikeouts.
