Series Notes
Stanislaus State has won seven straight in the series and are now 31-35 all-time against the Golden Eagles. The Warriors won all three games in Los Angeles last season and outscored them 21-8.
Unusual Non-Conference Games
This three-game set will count in the Win-Loss records but will not count towards the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings. These will be non-conference games. The teams meet later in the season, March 23-25, in Turlock for CCAA contests.
Migrating South Early
This is also an unusual trip South for the Warriors in week two of the season. Normally, Stan State would not be making a road trip to Southern California until later in the season. Last season, the Warriors did not go to SoCal until March 18 and in 2016, Stanislaus went to San Bernardino on March 19 … In fact, the last time the Warriors went down to the Southland this early was Feb. 4, 2004, when they play at Claremont-Mudd in Claremont.
CCAAÂ Baseball Player of the Week
Joe Ryan made an outstanding Warrior debut last Friday and he was rewarded as the CCAA's pitcher of the week. Ryan struck out nine batters without a walk in five innings of work. He gave up just one unearned run on five hits.
Leadoff Man Oki
Braeden Oki was solid as the Warriors' leadoff batter during opening weekend. Oki reached based eight times in 14 plate appearances, going 3-for-9 (.333) with four walks and was hit by a pitch. His on-base percentage was .571. He also scored four times and stole a base.
Three Strikes, You're Out!
The Warriors pitching staff struck out 38 batters in three games (27 innings) last week against Northwest Nazarene — that's a 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings average. During Friday's doubleheader, Stan State pitching fanned 27 batters thanks to nine by
Joe Ryan and seven from
Cody Kruip.
About Cal State L.A.
Friday night's game will be the Golden Eagles' first this season … LA is picked to finish fifth in the CCAA in the preseason poll … The Golden Eagles return 16 players including Sean Watkins, who belted 14 home runs and batted .368 in 2017. He also drove in 48 runs and was drafted in the 30th round in the MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants … Jorge Garcia also returned after hitting .327 with seven dingers last season.
