4/7/2019 9:42:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State baseball team improved to 13-4 in home games as the Warriors swept No. 3 UC San Diego in a doubleheader on Sunday.

Tyler Murphy and Matt Pulos out-pitched the UC San Diego staff to win game one, 4-2. Then, a seven-run third inning led to the Warriors' 7-3, seven-inning victory in the nightcap.

Stanislaus State, winners of nine out of the last 11 games, improved to 22-13 overall and 18-11 in the CCAA. The Warriors will look to win their third consecutive conference series in the finale on Monday. The Warriors have also won eight of last nine games played on home field with Saturday's opener as the only loss since March 1.

UC San Diego, ranked No. 3 in the latest national poll, dropped to 21-7, 16-7, but remains in first place in the CCAA.

Murphy turned in his second straight quality start with a six-inning outing. He gave up just an earned run on six hits with eight strikeouts. He did walk six batters but none of those Tritons came around to score. The only walk that caused a run was a bases loaded free-base to Eliopulos in the fourth inning.

Pulos was again dominant in relief. He threw three perfect, scoreless innings while facing the minimum. He struck out seven of the nine batters he faced to earn his fifth save. In eight relief appearances since his terrible start against Azusa Pacific, Pulos has not yielded a run — and gave up just two hits (in one game at Cal State San Marcos) — in 22 2/3 innings. Pulos has fanned 37 batters in these 22-plus innings.

Good thing the Warriors got to UCSD early in the first game, scoring three runs in the first two innings for a 3-1 lead.

UCSD's Preston Mott came in in relief of Cameron Leonard in the third and threw six innings and struck out 12 Warriors.

Margiotta, who singled in a run in the first, went 3-for-4 and Victor drove in two runs.

In game two, the Warriors scored seven runs on five hits. They started the inning with four straight hits, including a two-run double by Margiotta. The inning also included two sac flies and a throwing error by UCSD that alloed a run.

Stan State took a 7-0 lead into the seventh and final inning before UCSD scored three times to finally chase Warrior starter Rylan Tinsley. Tinsley was one out away from a complete game but ended up with two runs on four hits and seven strikeouts to improve to 7-2.

Victor and De La Guardia each had two hits to lead the offense in the nightcap.

The series finale on Monday is slated for a Noon start.
