Box Score SAN BERNARDINO — Another strong start from
Maxwell Pappas and a big seventh inning rally Friday led the Stanislaus State baseball team to an important series-opening win on the road, as the Warriors took down California Collegiate Athletic Association leader Cal State San Bernardino, 7-5, at Fiscalini Field.
Â
Pappas (3-1) turned in his third quality start of the season. He went a season-long seven innings and only allowed two runs while striking out eight. Stanislaus State (7-7, 5-4 CCAA) is 4-1 this season when Pappas starts on the mound.
Â
The Warriors scored four unearned runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-2 lead, which would later prove crucial when Cal State San Bernardino (10-9, 6-3 CCAA) tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth.
Trevor McInerney led off the inning with a triple and the Warriors already leading, 3-1. Two of the next three Stan State hitters recorded outs, but
Joseph Hauck reached safely on an error, scoring McInerney and extending the inning. Hauck would score on a wild pitch, making it 5-1, and then four two-out base hits followed, highlighted by
Zach Jones' two-run double to put the score at 7-1.
Â
Noah Chelberg entered in relief in the eighth looking for his third multi-inning save of the season. He escaped trouble in the eighth after two leadoff walks and a balk put two runners in scoring position with no outs. He looked to be settled in the ninth, striking out two of the first three batters, but then a walk and back-to-back singles brought home a run and loaded the bases.
Â
Trent Huff came on and earned his first career save with the winning run at the plate. He got Garrett Macias to fly out to center to end the game and end his day 0 for 5.
Â
Macias was one of the lone Coyotes to struggle on the day. CSUSB had 11 hits as a team with four multi-hit performances in the lineup. Stanislaus State one-upped them with 12 team hits and four of their own multi-hit games.
Â
Matt Elser hit his first home run of the season in the second inning to get the Warriors started and put them up, 1-0. Stan State never trailed in Friday's series opener against the CCAA's first-place team.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
