TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State men's golf team was only two strokes off the team title of its own 47th Annual Hanny Stanislaus Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, finishing the tournament tied for third among 15 West Region teams at the Turlock Golf & Country Club.
Stanislaus State finished only two strokes back of tournament winner and the West Region's top-ranked team Western Washington. The Warriors had a three-round team score of 868 (292-283-293—868), just behind WWU's winning team score of 286-287-293—866. Simon Fraser made a strong last-round push to finish second with a team score of 867, only one stroke ahead of the Warriors. SFU shot a 3-under 285 as a team in Tuesday's final round, eight strokes better than both Stan State's and WWU's third-round totals of 293.
Sonoma State shot the best team score of the whole tournament on Tuesday, going 16-under as a team with four players at 70 or better. The Seawolves shot up from seventh place after two rounds to reach a tie with the Warriors. Stanislaus State beat six other California Collegiate Athletic Association teams in the field.
The Warriors have done nothing but rise this spring, going from finishing 11th at their first tournament in February, to tying or beating all CCAA teams present with their second straight top-three finish on Tuesday. The CCAA Championship is two weeks away in Brooks at Yocha Dehe Golf Course.
Two Warriors finished among the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational's top-10.
Brad Sparrer led the way with a 3-under 213 (71-69-73—213) for the tournament, tying for eighth place. He had the second-most pars in the tournament (38) and was tied for third in par-3 scoring average (3.00).
Chris Ebster finished tied for 10th. He shot a one-under 71 in the tournament's opening round, was even-par in round two (72), and shot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to finish even for the tournament (216).
Michael Jura turned in one of just 20 rounds under 70 for the tournament, shooting a 3-under 69 in round two. He'd finish tied for 17th at 2-over for the tournament (75-69-74—218).
Tim Sauer gave Stanislaus State all four of its scoring golfers among the top-30. He tied for 29th with back-to-back 1-over 73s in rounds two and three after opening play with a 5-over 77.
Armaan Sahota placed 59th at 16-over (75-81-76—232).
Western Washington's Aidan Thain and Saint Martin's Tyler Fitchett tied for the individual title at 7-under (209). The two played a playoff to determine the individual medalist, but after four holes they were still tied and decided to call it off.
