BROOKS — The Stanislaus State men's golf team battled through strong winds Monday that made for tough playing conditions and emerged in second place after the first round of the 2022 California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship at Yocha Dehe Golf Club.
The Warriors shot a 16-over 304 team score and trailed Sonoma State by seven strokes through one round of the championship. The Seawolves shot a team total 9-over 297 to lead after day one. All five of the Warriors' golfers were among the tournament's top-15 on the individual leaderboard.
Chris Ebster was the Warriors' top golfer on Monday – one of three Warriors among the top-10. He sat tied for third individually with a 3-over 75. He started his day with two birdies in his first three holes, before the strong winds started blowing around 10 a.m.
Michael Jura and
Armaan Sahota were both tied for seventh with 4-over 76s. Jura was even through the first nine (36) and Sahota was 1-over (37), then both contended with the day's 25-mph sustained winds with gusts in the 30s on their second nine holes.
Tim Sauer and
Brad Sparrer both finished the day tied for 13th with 5-over 77s. Sparrer was briefly the individual leader when he was 2-under through six holes. He birdied his first, fifth and sixth holes on the day.
Only one player in the 40-player field shot even par on Monday. That was tou rnament leader Sonoma State's Nikolai Friedman, who carded an even 72 with 12 pars, three birdies and three bogies. The Warriors were 10 strokes ahead of the next team behind them, with Chico State turning in a team total score of 314 (+26). Cal State Dominguez Hills (315, +27) and Cal State San Marcos (317, +29) rounded out the top-five on the team leaderboard.
Tuesday's second round starts at 8 a.m. The Warriors will tee off at 9 a.m. and will be paired with the other top-four teams through day one – Sonoma State, Chico State and Cal State Dominguez Hills. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
