BROOKS — With Monday's wild winds settled, the teams and players settled into their games during Tuesday's second round of the 2022 California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship, as the Stanislaus State men's golf team held on to its second-place standing heading into the final day at the Yocha Dehe Golf Course.
The Warriors sat in second place after Monday's first round and held on to that spot on Tuesday, shooting a team total 297 (+9). It was a seven-stroke improvement from Monday's 304 team score, as they now total 601 (+25) through two rounds. Stanislaus State trails team leader Sonoma State (592, +16) by nine strokes heading into Wednesday's final round.
Tim Sauer and
Brad Sparrer both had the team's largest improvements on Tuesday. After both shooting 5-over 77s in the opening round, they cut five strokes from their scores and each turned in even-par 72s. Sauer and Sparrer both are among the tournament's top-seven for average scoring on the course's par-4s. Sparrer ranks second at 4.00 (even par) and Sauer is tied for seventh at 4.15. They're both currently tied for seventh on the individuals leaderboard at 5-over for the tournament (77-72—149).
Michael Jura also improved from Monday's 4-over 76 to shoot a 3-over 75 on Tuesday. He started his day with back-to-back bogies, but settled in to go nine straight holes with either a par or a birdie. He's tied for 12th individually at 7-over (76-75—151) through two rounds.
Chris Ebster shot a 6-over 78 to give the Warriors four individuals in the top-20, as he's tied for 18th at 9-over (75-78—153).
Armaan Sahota shot 13-over 85 on Tuesday and is tied for 33rd.
Cal State San Marcos shot the best team score of the day with a 1-over 289 to move from fifth to third place. CSUSM's Matthew Pennington is the individual leader through two rounds with a three-stroke lead over the field. He shot a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to sit at 2-under for the tournament (75-67—142).
The third and final round starts at 8 a.m. Wednesday, with the Warriors teeing off at 9 a.m. alongside leader Sonoma State, third-place Cal State San Marcos and fourth-place Chico State.
