4/13/2022 4:52:00 PM

BROOKS — For the 17th time in the last 20 years Wednesday, the Stanislaus State men's golf team was among the top-four best programs at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship, this time finishing fourth in the final round of the 2022 edition held at Yocha Dehe Golf Course.

Stanislaus State shot a 9-over 297 as a team to finish at 34-over for the tournament with a total team score of 898. It was Stan State's best team score in a CCAA Tournament since 2018 when it also shot 898 and finished eighth. It marked the fourth consecutive top-five finish for the Warriors this spring and the third straight time going under 900 as a team.

"Coming into the final round today, we had a chance to win. We were playing hard and we were trying to win," said Stanislaus State head coach Brandon Christianson. "Came up short and we'll move forward. I think everyone knows on an individual level what they need to do to keep it going, and the whole team, everyone's competitive. They want to do better and they want to contend at the next one."

Sonoma State won the team title with a 21-over 885. The Seawolves led the tournament wire-to-wire and had all four of their scorers finish among the top-20. Matthew Pennington of Cal State San Marcos won individual medalist honors with a 2-under 214 (75-67-72) for the tournament. Pennington won the individual title by four strokes over Sonoma State's Griffin Pace and Cal State Monterey Bay's Simon Bjorken (+2, 218).

Michael Jura turned in the fourth-best round of the day in the field, shooting a 1-under 71 to finish tied for 11th as Stanislaus State's highest-placing individual. Jura had six birdies in the final round, including a stretch of four in five consecutive holes after the turn. He finished the tournament with a 6-over 222 total score (76-75-71—222).

Brad Sparrer finished 14th individually with a tournament total of 9-over 225 (77-72-76—225). Sparrer had six birdies on Wednesday and would finish tied for fifth-most birdies over the three-day tournament with 11. Chris Ebster was the Warriors' third scorer with a 2-over 74 on Wednesday to finish the tournament tied for 16th at 11-over (75-78-74—227). Ebster played very steady in the final round with 12 pars and two birdies.

Tim Sauer tied for 25th with a 16-over 232 across three rounds and gave Stanislaus State four golfers among the top-25. Armaan Sahota tied for 33rd at 21-over (76-85-76—237).

"Their goals are aligned and they see the big picture," said Christianson. "They want it all, so they're disappointed with how they finished today, but they know that they have other opportunities and they're gonna be ready for them."

The Warriors next compete at the NCAA West/South Central Super Regional on May 5-7 at the Pueblo Country Club in Pueblo, Colo. Fans will be able to find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com and find updates at @GoStanState on social media.
