Stan State to Begin CCAA Season with Four-Game Home Series Against No. 29 Otters

TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State Warriors will look to continue their winning ways this weekend when they begin their CCAA season with a four-game home series with Collegiate Baseball preseason No. 29 Cal State Monterey Bay.  The 7-3 Warriors and Otters will begin the four-game series with a 6pm nine-inning game on Friday, February 24.  The series will continue with a 1pm starting doubleheader on Saturday, February 25.  The two teams will conclude the series with a noon starting single game on Sunday, February 26.

LAST WEEK: The Warriors went 4-1 last week including a series win over Central Washington to begin their nine-game home stand.  Stan State started the week with a 3-0 win over Menlo College on Tuesday.  Nine Warriors combined on a two-hit shutout.  Patrick Sweeney (1-0) picked up the win with Anthony Ramirez recording his second save.  Flavio Perez drove in two of the Warriors' three runs and had both of their hits.

Stan State continued its winning ways taking three out of four games from Central Washington over the weekend.  The Warriors hit .308 and had a 2.65 earned run average.  Danny Murphy hit a team high .444 with Flavio Perez with four runs batted in and Kyle Rachels with a team leading five runs scored.  Rachels hit a solo home run.  JD Madrigal, Tyler Van Dyk and Rachels each had two doubles.  Jacob Baker stole two of the Warriors three bases. 

LaKeal Morris, Kody Cardoza and Tony Jacob each recorded wins for Stan State.  Cardoza struck out seven Wildcat batters while Casey Carr had six strikeouts.  Austin Balentine and Anthony Ramirez combined to pitch five scoreless innings, giving up two hits while striking out two and walking one. The Warriors lost the opener 6-0, but came back and won the next three 8-4, 9-1 and 6-0. 

WARRIORS IN REVIEW: Stan State come into this weekend with a 7-3 record winning five its last seven games.  The Warriors are hitting .264 as a team with five Warriors hitting over .275 in Flavio Perez (.385), Kyle Rachels (.351), Tyle Van Dyk (.348), Ryan Leonesio (.296) and JD Madrigal (.286). They have 26 extra base hits including 20 doubles. Stan State has scored 63 runs and is 12-for-13 in stolen base attempts.

Rachels has two home runs with Perez and Van Dyk hitting the other two for Stan State.  Rachels and Perez lead the team with their five doubles while Leonesio and Madrigal each have a triple.  Perez has driven in a team leading 15 runs and Rachels has scored a team high 13 runs.  Rachels leads the team with his .649 slugging and .489 on-base percentages.  Jacob Baker is a perfect five-for-five fin stolen base attempts.  Rachels is three-for-three and Leonesio, Mac Cabero and Luke Davies each are one-for-one.  Jonluke Goldman is one-for-two.

Casey Carr leads the pitchers with his 2-0 record with Tony Jacob, LaKeal Morris, Kody Cardoza and Maxwell Pappas each with one victory.  Anthony Ramirez has two saves and Austin Balentine with the other save.  Balentine leads the team with his 0.00 earned run average in 10.2 innings pitched.  Three Warriors have double digits in strikeouts in Cardoza (12 strikeouts, one walk), Balentine (11 strikeouts, three walks) and Carr (10 strikeouts, six walks).
 
TEN:  Kyle Rachels has reached safely in everyone one of the Warriors' ten games this season.  Four Warriors have reached safely in at least five games in a row in Robert Valdivia (seven), Mac Cabero (six) and Flavio Perez (five).  Perez had had four game hitting streak in game one of Saturday's doubleheader with Central Washington.  Rachels has a four-game hitting streak and Alex Solis has a three-game hitting streak.

SIX/FIVE: Flavio Perez has driven in multiple-runs in six games this season including a five-run batted in game in the Warriors' 10-4 win over Holy Names on February 10.  Perez and Rachels each have five multiple-hit games. Perez has a four-hit game at Holy Names on February 11.  Rachel has a three-hit game on February 10 against Holy Names. 

OTTERS IN REVIEW: Cal State Monterey (2-5) has been off since February 11 when the Otters played a three-game series with No. 4 Point Loma.  The Otters lost that series 22-6, 13-3 and 9-6 to the 2022 NCAA Division II National Champion Runner-up.  CSUMB started its season splitting its four-game away non-conference series with No. 14 Azusa Pacific.  The Otters won 12-4 and 12-7 and lost 17-12 and 10-0.

They are hitting .260 as a team high three Otters hitting over .275 in Jack Tomlinson (.348), Drew Williams (.333) and Kyle Guera (.280).  Robbie Treto has a team high 1.167 slugging percentage and Nico Hartojo has a team leading .583 on-base percentage.  Tomlinson and Guera leads the team with eight runs scored.  Williams has driven in a team leading 11 runs and has a team high nine hits.  Of those nine hits, three are home runs and three doubles.

The Otter pitching staff has a 11.84 earned run average but against two top 15 nationally ranked teams.  Chris Tonna and Sonny Brandwood each have recorded victories for the Otters and Nick Bouillerce has one save.  Ryan Sleeman leads the team with his 3.00 earned run average while Hartojo has six strikeouts.

WARRIOR ADVANTAGE:  Stan State leads the all-time series with the Otters 39-31 but lost the last even straight games.  The last Warrior win was on February 28, 2020, a 9-0 Stan State win in Turlock.

UP NEXT:  The Warriors will return to the road for a four-game CCAA series at Chico State (March 3-5).  The series will begin with a 5pm starting game on March 4.  It will continue March 4 with a 1pm starting doubleheader. The two teams will conclude the series with a noon starting game on March 5.  Stan State will return home the following weekend (March 10-12) for a four-game series with Cal State San Bernardino.
