Stan State Looks to Clinch a Spot in the 2023 CCAA Baseball Championships

TURLOCK, Calif.--   With just four games remaining in the 2023 regular season, Stan State sits in sixth place in the CCAA just percentage points ahead of Cal State Dominguez Hills (seventh place) and Sonoma State (eighth place).  The Warriors are one game out of fifth place and 2.5 games out of third place.  Stan State finishes its regular season this weekend with a four-game series at Cal State East Bay (May 4-6). 
 
LAST WEEK:  After going 10-5, Stan State was swept by Sonoma State in its final home stand of the regular season.  The Warriors lost 5-2, 4-1, 8-0, and 4-1 to the Seawolves.  Flavio Perez (.417) and Mac Cabero (.357) each hit over .300 for the Warriors each with five hits as the Warriors hit just .174 for the weekend.  Stan State's pitching staff had a 5.03 earned run average while striking out 35 batters.  Anthony Ramirez and Tony Jacob each struck out seven batters and Maxwell Pappas had four.  The trio of Noah Chelberg, Kody Cardoza, and Casey Carr had three strikeouts.  LaKeal Morris had two relief appearances as he pitched in 1.1 innings, giving up a hit and no runs while striking out two. 
 
WARRIORS IN REVIEW:  Stan State heads into the final four games of the regular season with a 24-21 record and a 17-18 CCAA record.  The Warriors are hitting .258 as a team and have posted a 4.13 earned run average. 
 
Four Stan State positional players are hitting over .27 in Flavio Perez (.328), Alex Solis (.298), Mac Cabero (.287), and Kyle Rachels (.280).  Perez leads the team with his 59 hits, 13 doubles, 30 runs batted in, 86 total bases, and .478 slugging percentage.  He is tied for the team lead with Tyler Van Dyk each with four.  Rachels leads the team with his .387 on-base percentage and 31 runs scored.  Jacob Baker has stolen a team leading 14 bases.  Baker is tied for the tea lead in triples with Perez, Cabero, Ryan Leonesio, and JD Madrigal each with one. 
 
Seven Warrior pitchers have posted an earned run average of 3.50 or lower in Bobby Garcia (1.42), Noah Chelberg (1.85), Patrick Sweeney (2.08), Austin Balentine (2.70), Antony Ramirez (2.75), Tony Jacob (3.10), and Casey Carr (3.49). Carr leads the team with his 5-4 record and Ramirez has recorded a team leading seven saves.  Three pitchers have recorded at least 40 strikeouts in Carr (42), Jacob (43), and Maxwell Pappas (43). 
 
12-5 ON THE ROAD:  Stan State is 12-6 on the road this season including 10-5 in CCAA games.  The Warriors are hitting .260 on the road with five players hitting .270 or higher in Flavio Perez (.360), Tyler Van Dyk (.306), Alex Solis (.299), Mac Cabero (.281), and Jacob Baker (.283).  Van Dyk has hit three home runs on the road and three Warriors are four-for-four each in stolen base attempts in Baker, Kyle Rachels, and Ryan Leonesio.  Cabero leads the team with his 14 runs batted in and Perez has scored a team high 14 runs.
 
The Warrior pitching staff's earned run average is 3.56 led by Anthony Ramirez (0.56) and Damian Vallejos (0.73).  Casey Carr has a 2.89 earned run average and Tony Jacob has a 3.28 on the road.  Stan State has struck out 130 opponents led by Carr with 21 followed by Jacob with 19, Austin Balentine with 16, Ramirez with 13, and Maxwell Pappas with 11.
 
SIXTH PLACE:  Stan State is in sixth place in the CCAA with just four games left in the regular season.  The top six teams after the games are completed on Saturday, May 6 will receive a berth to the 2023 CCAA Baseball Championships, May 10-13, in Seaside, Calif.  Three teams have clinched a berth already in Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, and Cal Poly Pomona.  Below are the updated standings and who is playing who this weekend. 
 
50: The Warriors have stolen 50 bases this season in 54 attempts led by Jacob Baker going 14-for-14.  Ryan Leonesio is eight-for-eight and Mac Cabero is eight-for-ten while Kyle Rachels is seven-for-seven. 
 
NATIONAL LEADERS:  As a team, the Warriors are 11th in the nation in sacrifice bunts, 19th in earned run average, and 22nd in hits allowed per nine innings.  Robert Valdivia is eighth in sacrifice bunts and tenth in sacrifice bunts/game.  Danny Murphy is 16th in sacrifice bunts/games and 24th in sacrifice bunts.  Anthony Ramirez is 17th in saves.
 
CCAA LEADERS:  Stan State is leading the CCAA in earned run average and sacrifice hits while the Warriors are second in stolen bases and strikeouts.  Stan State is third in double plays and sixth in victories.  Casey Carr is tied for fifth in wins while he is sixth in opponents' batting average and ninth in earned run average.  Jacob Baker leads the league in hit by pitches and is second in stolen bases.  Tyler Van Dyk is seventh in sacrifice bunts and eighth in walks.  Robert Valdivia leads the CCAA in sacrifice bunts while Maxwell Pappas is third in opponents' batting average.  Flavio Perez is tied for second in sacrifice flies and Tony Jacob is fourth in earned run average.  Kyle Rachels is sixth in walks and Danny Murphy is tied for third in sacrifice bunts.
 
UPDATE ON THE PIONEERS:  Cal State East Bay enters this weekend's series with Stan State 25-21 overall and 19-17 in the CCAA. They are tied for third place with San Francisco State just percentage points ahead of Cal Poly Pomona and the Warriors.  The Pioneers are hitting .305 as a team and have a 4.92 earned run average. 
 
Five players are hitting over .300 in Cole Anderson (.369), Matthew O'Mahony (.351), Luke Novitske (.337), Manny Garcia (.316), and Luke Brown (.310).  Novitske leads the team with his 36 runs, 33 runs batted in, and 60 hits.  Brown leads the team with his 18 doubles and two triples.  Anderson has a team high .503 slugging and .424 on-base percentages.  Essex Brown Jr., leads the team with his 27-for-30 in stolen base attempts.  Ethan Brodsky has a team best 7-3 record, team low 3.21 earned run average, and team high 86 strikeouts.  James Colyer has recorded five saves to lead the way for Cal State East Bay.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  The all-time series has the Warriors with a 36-23 advantage.  They have split the last two four-game series.  Stan State won the first two games in Turlock last season 8-7 and 2-1 before losing 3-2 (eight innings) and 18-7.  Jonluke Goldman was four-for-four with a run batted in and a run scored in the opener with Austin Balentine picking up the win in relief.  Maxwell Pappas pitched a complete game four-hitter in the Warriors' 3-2 victory.  Alex Solis went one-for-two and scored the winning run on a passed ball.   In their 3-2 loss, Casey Carr recorded the no-decision as he pitched five innings, giving up three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out six and walking one.  Danny Murphy was one-for-three with two runs batted in for the Warriors.  Stan State lost the series finale 18-7 despite Murphy and Carr going a combined three-for-five with five runs batted in and a run scored.  The year before in Hayward, Stan State won 8-2 and 6-3 (13 innings) and lost 8-2 and 7-6.  Pappas recorded the victory in relief in the 6-4 extra-inning victory.
