Baseball to Face Toros in Four-Game Series in Carson This Weekend

TURLOCK, Calif.---  After starting its 2025 season with fourteen straight home games, Stan State will travel to Carson, Calif., this Friday-Sunday, February 28-March 2 for a four-game CCAA series with Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The series will with a 2:00 p.m. nine-inning game this Friday, February 28.  The two teams will play a noon starting doubleheader this Saturday, March 1.  They will conclude the series this Sunday, March 2 with an 11:00 a.m. starting game. 

LAST WEEK: The Warriors split their CCAA opening series with No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino at home, 2-2.  Stan State took the series opener 7-2.  The two teams split the Saturday doubleheader with CSUSB taking game two 7-2 and the Warriors taking the night cap 5-4 on walk-off fashion.  CSUSB took the series finale 18-11.  Stan State hit .339 as a team with a .973 fielding percentage.  Four players hit .400 or higher in Luke Davies (.571), Robert Valdivia (.467), Tyler Van Dyk (.400), and Jonluke Goldman (.400).  The Warriors hit four home runs one each by Davies, Alex Solis, Arthur Navarette Jr., and Flavio Perez.  Picking up victories on the mound for the Warriors were Austin Balentine and Noah Chelberg.  Balentine struck out a career high eight batters in his series opening win on Friday.   

WARRIORS IN REVIEW:  After concluding its 14-game home stand, Stan State is 7-7 including 2-2 in the CCAA.  The Warriors are hitting .283 as a team with a .983 fielding percentage and a 4.61 earned run average.  They have posted a .438 slugging and .386 on-base percentages. 

HITTERS:  Six Warriors are hitting over .300 as a team in Jacob Baker (.359), Ryan Leonesio (.359), Luke Davies (.357), Arthur Navarette Jr. (.346), Tyler Van Dyk (.333), and Jackson Brooks (.308).  JD Madrigal leads the team with his 10 runs batted in and Alex Solis has scored a team high 11 runs.  Three Warriors have hit three home runs each in Davies, Solis, and Flavio Perez.  Solis has a team leading six doubles while Robert Valdivia leads the team with his two triples.  Davies has a team high .750 slugging percentage and Leonesio has a team high .490 on-base percentage.  Baker leads Stan State with his four stolen bases.

PITCHERS: With at least fourteen innings pitched, Austin Balentine leads the Warriors with his team low 2.81 earned run average.  Stan State has struck out 111 batters this season with 70 walks in 127 innings pitched.  Leading the way is Rocco Gurrola with 21 strikeouts and four walks followed by Cameron Rosen with 16 strikeouts and four walks.  Austin Balentine has 14 strikeouts and six walks with Caleb Bertoncini with 13 strikeouts and nine walks.  Rosen has the Warriors' only save.  Balentine and Zach Geiss each are 2-0. Bertoncini, Gurrola, and Noah Chelberg are each 1-1 on the mound. 

WALK-OFFS:  Already in the young season, Stan State has two walk-off victories.  The first came in the Warriors 3-2 victory in ten innings of Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 16.  Alex Solis had a lead-off double and was pinch ran for by Jackson Brooks who then went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Flavio Perez.  Brooks scored on an Arthur Navarette Jr. infield single to second base.  Their second walk-off win was in the night cap of this past Saturday's doubleheader with No. 20 CSUSB.  With one out, Perez and Luke Davies had back-to-back singles.  Danny Murphy pinch ran for Perez and scored on a Jonluke Goldman single up the middle. 

NATIONALLY RANKED:  Stan State is second in the nation with its 16 sacrifice hits, 17th in fielding percentage (.983), and 19th in triples (five).  Ryan Leonesio and Robert Valdivia are tied for eighth with eight sacrifice hits.  Valdivia is 10th with his two triples while Alex Solis is 27th with his six doubles.  Leonesio is 42nd in toughest to strikeout.  He has one strikeout with seven walks and three hit by pitches in 39 at bats.    

FLOCOLLEGE/CCAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:  On February 10 as announced by the office of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Stan State's Rocco Gurrola was named the FloCollege/CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week.  Gurrola struck out seven batters and walked no one in the Warriors' 10-2 victory over Saint Martin's on February 8. 

ALL-TIME LEADER:   Alex Solis is the all-time leader with 46 doubles in the NCAA DII ERA of Warrior baseball.  Solis is fourth on the hits list with 165. He is three RBI's from moving into tenth place on the RBI list and two runs from moving into the top ten in runs scored.

ALSO MOVING CLOSER:  Four Warriors in Jacob Baker, Austin Balentine, Ryan Leonesio, and Flavio Perez are moving closer to moving into the top ten lists at Stan State in the D2ERA.  Baker is five stolen bases from moving into the top ten as he has 30 career stolen bases.  Balentine is five victories away from moving into the top ten in the wins list as he is now 12-4 in his career.  With his 30 stolen bases, Leonesio is five from moving into the top ten in stolen bases.  Perez has 13 career home runs and driven in 76 runs.  Those numbers place him one home runs and 14 runs batted in from moving into tenth.  

MULTIPLE:  Arthur Navarette Jr. has seven multiple-hit games while four Warriors have five multiple-hit games in Jacob Baker, Ryan Leonesio, Robert Valdivia, and Alex Solis.  Navarette has three multiple-RBI games and is on a seven-game hitting streak.  Leonesio has reached base safely in the Warriors' first 14 games and Valdivia has reached base safely in the last 12 Stan State games. 

CSUDH:  Cal State Dominguez Hills is 7-6 and 3-1 in the CCAA after taking three out of four games from Cal State San Marcos on the road. The Cougars took game one 12-1, but the Toros won the final three games 8-1, 6-2, and 9-8.  The Toros are hitting .279 as a team with a .465 slugging and .370 on-base percentage.  They have a .963 fielding percentage with a team earned run average of 5.94.  Dylan Schumacher leads the way with his .514 batting average, .971 slugging and .553 on-base percentages.  Two other Toros are hitting over .300 in Noah Karliner and Hared Anderson each at .302. Karliner has hit a team high five home runs to go with his team leading five doubles.  Anderson has stolen a team high four bases.  Quinn Johnson leads the team with his 13 runs scored with Karliner, Johnson, and Teige Barrett each driving in a team high 11 runs.  Julien Castro has a 2-9 and Justin Abercrombie is 2-1 on the mound.  Teige Barrett has two of the Toros' three saves.  Trysten Eddy has struck out a team high 20 batters followed by Abercrombie with 19 and Evan Vasquez with 18. Brian Kraft has recorded 10 strikeouts with just three walks in 5.1 innings.   

ALL-TIME SERIES:  CSUDH leads the all-time series with the Warriors 34-24.  The Toros took three out of four games from Stan State last season in Turlock.  The Warriors defeated the Toros 5-4 with Austin Balentine recording the win in the series finale.  In 2023 in Carson, the Warriors took three out of four games for CSUDH taking the first three games 10-3, 8-5 (11), and 4-3 (10) before losing the series finale 12-4.

UP NEXT:  After Sunday's series finale, Stan State will return home for a four-game series with Cal State Los Angeles, March 7-9 at Warrior Stadium.  The two teams will play a 6:00 p.m. starting series opener on Friday, March 7.  The series will conclude with a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 8.  The series finale is set for Sunday, March 8 at noon.
