Fleming throws another gem in doubleheader sweep

2/17/2008 3:36:11 PM

Marquis Fleming pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout in game one and the Warriors came storming back for their fourth come-from-behind victory in game two to cap a wild Sunday in a 6-0, 4-3 doubleheader sweep of Oregon Tech at Warrior Field.

The sweep moves the Warriors' record to 7-3, the team's best start since 2006 when they started with a 14-3 record. The Hustlin' Owls fall to 1-7 overall.

Fleming walked three batters in the first three innings, but settled down to retire 20 of 21 batters en route to his second win of the season. It was Fleming's second complete game after a one-run, 12 strikeout gem against Central Washington on Feb. 10 that earned him CCAA Pitcher of the Week honors.

"Our pitchers work hard in their weekly routines," Warrior head coach Kenny Leonesio said. "(Fleming) is an excellent pitcher and it helps that he's very durable."

The Warriors gave Fleming all the support he needed in game one during a six-run fourth inning. A one-out double by Tomas Donnelly started things off. Donnelly would later score on a fielder's choice. The rest of the damage was done with two outs in the inning. Leandro Dottavio scored on a Jacob Thelen RBI bunt single. David Contreras drove in two runs with a single and Dante Palacios doubled in two more runs before the final out was made.

In game two of Sunday's doubleheader, Oregon Tech took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning, but the Warriors' flare for late-game comebacks would resurface.

In the bottom of the seventh, with the bases loaded and two outs, Kyle Loretelli stepped to the plate and drove the first pitch he saw to right field to score Palacios, who started things with a one-out single, and give the Warriors the 4-3 victory.

"We're going to get better. I think to come away with some big come-from-behind wins shows what kind of team we are," Loretelli said. "I knew I was going to get a fastball first pitch and I just sat on it."

The fifth inning started with a Mike Myhre triple to deep center field. Oregon Tech designated hitter Dustin Kim Seu followed with an RBI single. Another single by Trenton Smith moved Kim Seu over to third. Warrior first baseman Adam Fonville botched a pick off throw by Anthony Smith, scoring Kim Seu to give the Hustlin' Owls a 2-0 lead. A sacrifice fly would later score Smith to put the Hustlin' Owls up by three.

In the bottom of the sixth, Dennis Wolfe jump-started the Warriors offense with a push-bunt single towards first base. His teammates responded by following with four straight base hits and three RBI, the last coming as an RBI double off the bat of Josh Lewis to tie the game at three.

The Warriors will begin CCAA play at 2 p.m. on Friday when they head to San Francisco for a single game against the Gators of SFSU. The series moves to Turlock for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.
